Schlesinger signals possible North Vietnam bombing resumption
Secretary of Defense nominee James R. Schlesinger told the Senate committee that resuming bombing in North Vietnam cannot be ruled out. He argued no politically suitable alternative exists to continued bombing in Cambodia to seek an overall Southeast Asia settlement. He affirmed constitutional authority for warfare in Indochina but said Congress should act to stop it if funds are blocked. He noted possible troop withdrawals from Europe contingent on Soviet pullback and opposed unilateral disarmament. He sees unlikely the need to resume bombing in Laos.
