Coal markets shift as strike drains metallurgical supply
Most metallurgical coal comes from southern West Virginia with northern mines serving utilities. Utilities rebuilt stockpiles after the strike, but the utility market remains weak. Only company owned captive mines, including U S Steel, Armco, Bethlehem, and Appalachian Power Co, show stability. Much spot market coal has gone to Japan, whose demand has fallen, prompting a possible Rockefeller administration trade mission to Tokyo to boost Far East sales.
