Trade deficit falls as first-quarter current account improves

The Commerce Department reports the U.S. current account deficit at 5.3 billion dollars for the first three months, a 26.5 percent improvement from the prior quarter. The gain reflects lower oil prices, more foreign tourism spending in the United States, and stronger overseas earnings for U.S. banks. Separately, May housing starts rose 11 percent, recovering part of April’s 17.3 percent drop, while industrial output climbed 0.6 percent in May.
