Freedom Summer changed South and U S history in Mississippi
Roy Berry grew up under Jim Crow as Illinois native Aviva Futorian arrived as a young history teacher and SNCC volunteer during Freedom Summer 1964. They bonded while teaching, registering voters, and sharing books, amid church bombings, arrests, and threats. The movement helped spur the Civil Rights Act of 1964 and the Voting Rights Act of 1965, shaping ongoing activism and politics.
