Monroe County adopts PALS literacy grant program
Monroe County Schools receive a $90,000 grant from state and federal funds to implement IBM's Principal of the Alphabet Literacy System PALS. District coordinators Sable Dowdy Buckland and Hall attended IBM training in Atlanta during 1989 90. A teacher training event at Pipestone State Park ran May 20 22 with IBM and district staff. Ghaski Lee of the WV Department of Education praised the program. Demaree Hopkins Charlene Milkowski and district staff taught PALS philosophy setup and use. A PALS lab was established to teach reading by writing using 44 phonemes across software and hardware. Students divide time between an IBM InfoWindow romanced fable and a word processing station to learn touch typing. The program aims to give adolescent Specific Learning Disability students functional literacy before vocational training and graduation.
