Southern Baptists push political role in US life
The Southern Baptist Convention urged participation in politics at all levels while decrying perceived censorship of religion in schools. Delegates pressed for Judeo Christian standards as essential, urged boards to reject textbooks erasing religious heritage, and called for prayer and Bible reading to be restored in public schools. Tensions between fundamentalists and moderates surfaced briefly as the meeting ended.

Seven Officials Indicted in $50,000 Bribery Ring
Seven officials including five USDA meat inspectors and a former supervisor were indicted in Newark on charges of a six year scheme to submit bogus meat samples for analysis. Investigators traced the ring after a whistleblower alerted authorities in December.
