American student Sami Esmail sentenced in Israel
A Tel Aviv court sentenced Sami Esmail, a 24 year old American student of Palestinian descent and Michigan State University graduate engineering student, to 15 months in prison for membership in an enemy organization the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine. He was arrested December 21 1977 at Ben Gurion Airport while visiting his ill father in the occupied West Bank. The judge noted his academic record and lack of evidence of assignment for the guerrilla group.
