Readers weigh war stance as Carter faces Soviets
Telegraph readers across Virginia express split views on confronting the Soviet Union. Bruce Albright of Princeton urges a firm stand, even war if necessary, to support smaller nations and deter aggression. Dennis Bailey of Lashmeet backs war if the USSR threatens U.S. safety, while Antone Drosick of Boissevain questions war without a clear alternative. Other voices urge diplomacy and restraint, stressing the human cost of conflict and the need for strong but prudent leadership from Carter.

Castro spoke to Lyle F Lane in Havana on May 17 and allegedly conveyed the warning via a secret cable.
