Home schoolers enjoy summer break in Mercer County
Daily Telegraph staff writer Greg Jordan reports Mercer County has about 85 to 90 home schooled children with rising numbers. Parents teach for religious reasons or to meet education needs, with safety cited as a third factor near cities. Recent legislative changes require only a GED to teach any age, while a letter of intent and an instructional plan are filed. Progress is yearly assessed by tests or portfolios, with remediation and possible court action if below the 40th percentile.
