The trial of Floyd DeGraw, 32, charged with the stabbing death of Andriana Vaught, moves from Mercer County to Raleigh County. Jury selection set for Wednesday and opening statements planned for Thursday before Judge Canter bury in Beckley.
A busy slate of local gatherings includes a free health fair at East End Baptist Church from 8 a.m. to noon with screenings and lectures, NAACP meeting at Bluefield Community Center at 11 a.m., and various civic group sessions from June 13 to 17. Also summer school registration at Princeton High and the Bluefield Antique Festival Friday evening. Weather forecasts expect highs in the low 70s with showers possible.
Princeton Mercer County detectives say they have closed the Jeffrey Scott Vaught case and are moving toward arrest. A suspect name will not be released. Vaught, 34, was found shot in his car near Beach Club in Spanishburg on December 11, 1993. Police initially suspected non foul play but autopsy showed the bullet came from several feet away.
About 975 customers in Welch were without power from roughly 7 p.m. until 10:20 p.m. Thursday when a tree fell through the Welch Maitland Circuit. Appalachian Power Bluefield Division spokesman Karen Simmons said new wires were needed for restoration. Welch street lights remained served by the Welch-Roderfield Circuit despite surrounding outages. No other major outages were reported.
In Richlands Virginia and Bluefield West Virginia VFW officials criticized members who wore uniforms and displayed flags at Oliver North campaign appearances. Ninth District Commander Smokey Sims warned such actions violate VFW code and urged members to vote without endorsing political candidates.
Health officials in Charleston say no cases of a tissue destroying group A streptococcus strain have been reported in West Virginia. Epidemiologist Loretta Addy warns not to let guard down while noting several Michigan deaths from the infection. Doctors urge prompt treatment, with penicillin as effective when begun early.
Mercer County Airport Authority members voiced confidence in the airport’s improving finances and cash flow after implementing computerization and tighter procedures. Officials cited faster reporting, reduced transaction turnaround, and a strengthened cash reserve while noting an audit recommendation to inventory property. Authority members also discussed selling 895 shares of CCAir stock held by the authority.
