Background checks block 204000 gun purchases last year
Justice Department figures show state and local agencies rejected 3 percent of prospective gun buyers in 1999, higher than the FBI’s 1.8 percent. States had access to more detailed criminal history and other disqualifying databases, while the FBI handled fewer checks. The data cover almost 22.3 million applications since 1994 and note shifts in prosecutorial focus and Supreme Court rulings affecting firearm cases.
