Washington July 5 AP reports the Senate passed the bill to extend Roosevelt's powers to devalue the dollar and run the currency stabilization fund by a 43 to 39 vote. Republicans argued the powers expired last Friday and the measure cannot be revived but administration officials dismissed the challenge.
Dr S T Bird of Princeton was appointed to the state board of education by Gov Homer A Holt to fill a vacancy. The move came as Holt also named Stanley E Dadisman acting attorney and reappointed Alfred E Goodwyn to the barbers and beauticians committee. Bird has served in the state legislature and Princeton city government and is a U S Army dental corps veteran.
London observers warned a vague clause in Britain's guarantee to Poland could be used to avoid defending Polish independence. Richard Butler said Britain would “certainly sell” to Poland, but cautioned the guarantee refers to a clear threat, leaving doubt about how Britain and France would respond if Danzig actions threatened Poland.
Dr. W. E. Thompson, a beleaguered physician, nears his 104th birthday in Bethel Ohio. Though recently recovering from a serious illness, he remains frail yet optimistic and quips it is only because he hasn’t died as he looks toward a quiet celebration.

Two former Kanawha county welfare council workers confessed to forging relief checks totaling an estimated eight to ten thousand dollars. John E. Burchett and Ben W. Burchett handled the scrutiny of funds while Wakeman managed a strong box containing in transit checks. each admitted two years of participation with checks likely under ten dollars each.

About 50 mountain residents died as torrents burst 15 feet high washing away homes along streams in Breathitt and surrounding counties. Morehead area saw 38 deaths. Breathitt reported seven known dead and 69 missing. Damages could top 1 million in Breathitt with bridges washed out and communications crippled. Rescue efforts continued as authorities identified several recovered bodies in Rowan County.
