Three Die As Jet Fighter Runs Wild at Lincoln Base
A Navy jet fighter on a Lincoln Air Force Base flight line unleashed 100 percent power injuring three and destroying seven aircraft. Lt. Vernon R. Chapman Jr. 25, of Grand Island died. Air Controlman J. C. Kenneth Newman 24 and Air Controlman Hubert Lee Tracy 29, both Lincoln residents, also perished inside the hangar. The hangar burned to the ground, with firefighting crews from the base and city containing the blaze amid millions in damages.
