Three Burned in Pond Creek Mine Blast Near Williamson

In Williamson West Virginia December 13 three men were burned and two feared missing after a small explosion at the Pond Creek Collieries Goody Kentucky mine. Company official P J Wynns said two men unaccounted for and injuries to Corbin Smith Elmer Smith and Millard Roberts all described as not serious. Victims were taken to Williamson Memorial hospital. Goody lies just across the West Virginia Kentucky line.

Davy voters to decide on incorporation plans

Davy residents vote tomorrow to determine whether to incorporate to obtain corporate services. Polls open 6 30 a m to 7 30 p m at Burgess Cash Store, the sole polling place. All residents within the proposed town limits may vote, despite rumors that only property owners could.

Zoning Board Rejects Two Bids In Bluefield Meeting

Bluefield Board of Adjustments denied Eagle Insulating at Vineyard Street for a one story storage block building and Ira Owenby at 1808 College Avenue for a basement storage use despite protests and petitions. S. A. Bowling won permission to occupy a room at 2300 Princeton Avenue for a grocery store. American Oil’s six inch sign at 1817 Bland Street was denied. R. P. Bird won approval to alter 1113 Luther Street adding a bathroom.

Fur theft at West Virginian hotel theft value

Local police investigate the Sunday morning theft of furs valued at 4918 from Parlor C at the West Virginian hotel. Harman Fur Farm owner Roy Harman has posted a 500 dollar reward, joined by hotel manager W J Cole, as officers A G Porterfield L B French and C N Wilson lead the inquiry. The stolen items include mink scarves coats and platina fox pieces totaling 4918 dollars.

Theft and damage events reported to Bluefield police

Police logged several incidents including five bedsheets and a blanket stolen from a clothesline at 1508 Jefferson Street home of Alex Funuri between noon and 3 p.m. A Kirby Vacuum Cleaners vehicle at 908 Bland Street reported a sideswipe Sunday night with damage to its machine and a missing gas cap on the other vehicle.

Mrs. Fannie Hutchinson born January 24 1892 died near midnight Sunday at Memorial hospital will be buried at Rest Haven cemetery after funeral at Princeton Presbyterian Church at 4 PM conducted by Rev John Womeldorf. Forfeit Bonds On Drunk Driving Charges

In Bluefield Municipal Court last night 24 cases were heard. Two defendants, David William French and Clarence Robert George, both from Bluefield, forfeited $151 bonds on drunken driving charges. Other bonds of $16 each were forfeited by Richard Leon Byrd of Bluefield and Herman Hamm of North Tazewell on assault charges. George also forfeited a $16 bond for operating without first securing a permit. Fern Gamble of Bluefield was fined and jailed 15 days for vagrancy and loitering. Winston Lindsay of Columbus, Ohio had a nolle prosequi. Everette Neal of Rocky Gap and Gloria Pennington of Bluefield were fined 10 and costs 15 days in jail for disturbing the peace. Of 15 drunk charges, 11 forfeited $16 bonds and four were fined $15 and 20 days in jail.

Mercer Plumbers Elect Treasurer and Assistant Treasurer

Jack Thompson of Bluefield was elected treasurer and Charles B. Lowder elected assistant treasurer of the Master Plumbers association of Mercer county at a regular meeting last night in the Fox and Thompson Heating and Plumbing display room. The group discussed membership with a report of 20 members and goodwill and working conditions. The next meeting is set for January 10 at Harry's restaurant in Princeton.

Aged Resident Dies At McComas

Ada Manns, 87, a local colored resident, died at McComas this morning at her daughter Martha Jamison's home. Rites will be held in Henry, Virginia, on Thursday.

Missing Tazewell County boy feared en route to Charleston

Harvey Edward Barton, 15, son of Mr and Mrs H E Barton of North Tazewell, disappeared after leaving for school on December 6. He reportedly bought a bus ticket to Bluefield and had over $50. He is described as 5 feet 8 inches tall, 115 pounds, blue eyes, medium brown hair, wearing a brown leather jacket green flannel shirt brown trousers and a red leather cap. Police have no trace. Mrs Barton and Dr Witten in Tazewell are authorities.

Local Firm Fined In Mercer Circuit Court

In Bluefield Judge D M Easley fined Alex Funari and Black Diamond Lines Inc fifty dollars and costs for contempt of court for violating an injunction on November 12 13 14 by parking trucks on west portion of their residence property lots 1 3 section 813 Bluefield. A second petition filed alleges further violation on October 28 by parking on lot 3 section 183 and Funari must show cause on December 20 why they should not be held in contempt.

Ground Broken For New Dorms At Virginia Tech

Ground breaking ceremony at Virginia Tech saw William E. Wine, rector of the board of visitors, turn the first shovel for three new brick dormitories. The buildings, part of the old brick quadrangle, rise three stories and are due for completion before the 1949 fall term opening.
