A large Abingdon warehouse blaze killed one person and caused extensive damage. Firefighters battled the flames through the night, with investigators beginning to determine the cause and extent of losses. Local authorities cordoned off the area as responders worked to secure the site and assess structural safety.
United Nations delegates attempted a closed session to admit 18 new members after a General Assembly vote. Henry Cabot Lodge Jr. blasted the event as a star chamber practice and said the United States was not invited. No formal decisions emerged. The Security Council would meet again.
A 5-year-old girl, Victoria Mullins, died in a four-room frame house fire in Pound Virginia. Father Stewart Mullins and brother David, 7, were injured and treated at St. Marys Hospital Norton for second and third degree burns and shock.
A Wyoming County grand jury returned murder indictments in two separate killings. Geraldine Lawson, 19, and Glen Rogers, 7 were charged in the deaths of tavern operator John Yambor 538 and hunter Woodrow Craft 34. Omaha police conduct house-to-house searches for clues in the slaying of Carolyn Nevins a 20 year old University of Omaha coed, as Detective Inspector Ernest Brown directs the rapid probe and seeks early developments.
In Abingdon Virginia a two-block warehouse complex housing Walters Lumber Co and Burley Tobacco was gutted after a fire that burned over two hours. James Walters Jr. died from smoke inhalation after attempting to rescue records. Damages exceed $200,000, fire crews from Bristol Glade Springs and Abingdon contained the blaze by nightfall.
Seven Russell County Democrats seek a writ of mandamus to force the counting of 32 challenged mail ballots from the November 8 election. Judge E T Carter set the hearing in circuit court for next Monday in Lebanon Virginia. Dor ton Precinct officials deny the petition and contend methods were already provided by law.
Abingdon Virginia December 12 A Lebanon driver Paul Kyle Combs 32 died when his car was struck by a Norfolk and Western passenger train at a crossing on Route 11 near the Abingdon outskirts. He was removed from the wreckage and pronounced dead on arrival at a local hospital.
Baltimore drama centers on Junior Spurrier, a 32 year old Medal of Honor and Distinguished Service Cross recipient and former Bluefield resident. He was released after one night in jail for carrying and discharging a 45 pistol during a home incident involving Mary Murphy and Mrs. Neece. Spurrier says he fired at the floor to quiet Mrs Neece and plans to marry Murphy once she divorces.
Israel says four posts on the Sea of Galilee shore were attacked in a night battle. Reported Syrian losses include 25 killed and 28 missing, while Israel reports 55 Syrians killed and 29 captured with four Israeli dead and 12 wounded. Syrian accounts claim 100 Israeli casualties and describe a broader assault.
Blue Field Community Christmas Tree Association volunteers launched a telephone canvass to boost donations as callers used five phones for three hours. Nearly all donors contacted renewed or increased gifts, with results to be read on WHIS radio Sunday during Christmas Tree shows.

Petersbur g Va December 12 Preliminary hearings are set for December 19 in Dinwiddie County court for two attendants charged in the beating of 77 year old Central State Hospital patient John Cousins. Cousins remains in critical condition with four fractured ribs. Attendants Marion Graves and John Green were arrested Saturday. Dr Juul C Neilsen says Cousins resisted going to bed prompting the attack.
A steam freight engine exploded near Wytheville Virginia injuring engineer W D Shumate Jr and two other crew members M B Shorter and F H Sledd. Fireman H C Hawthorne was killed. The blast damaged cars tracks and a nearby house while several trains suffered delays.
