Officers halted a Chevrolet coupe carrying 50 gallons of moonshine on Oakvale road. Hodges allegedly ignored signals, crashed into a parked state car, and was captured after a collision that spilled alcohol onto him. He faces arraignment before U S Commissioner A J Hearn in Princeton.
Washington reports say a Muscle Shoals agreement could come next week as Senate and House conferees press a compromise. Senator McNary said headway was made and a majority of the House group might be won over. Key issues: power distribution and products at nitrate plants. Senator Norris suggested allowing by products of fertilizer. the House wants defense related chemical and electrochemical products too.
Charles Donley of the United States Potters Association Pittsburgh was elected general chairman of the Allegheny regional advisory board of shippers and rail carriers in western Pennsylvania northern West Virginia eastern Ohio and the Mary and Panhandle. Leo H. Ley of Kelly-Springfield Tire Cumberland Md. was general secretary and Ernest H. Gilbert Gilbert Fuel Morgantown was executive committee chairman. Next board meeting slated for June 1931 with location to be announced.
A column notes James A. Graham of Buffalo who died in July 1930 and once walked 123 miles non stop on Sept 8 1924 a world record. It also recalls his other long distance trips from Toronto to New York Buffalo to Boston and Buffalo to New York. James A Graham was a renowned heel and toe artist.
Joseph Henry McDermott of Morgantown built a diverse career in business politics and military service. He presided over the West Virginia Senate in 1907 led Republican activities nationally and served as Taft elector in 1908 while steering campaigns for Elkins and Davis Elkins. He headed J H McDermott Oil Co and Moore Texal Co and reached colonel rank in the West Virginia National Guard.

Buchanan county Virginia constable David Smith is free on $2000 bail after being charged with the slaying of Percy Johnson 38 of Hazard Kentucky. Johnson was shot near Knox Creek after a halt of a car linked to liquor and a dispute over alleged intoxicated driving. Johnson’s body was sent to Hazard for burial.

Major-General James Fechet and Brigadier-General Benjamin Foulois, both aging leaders, commanded aircraft from the West Coast to Anacostia. The two senior aviators, ages 53 and 52, prove aviation is not a young man’s game as they pilot missions in the air corps fleet. Foulois, the army’s senior aviator, learned to fly in 1908 both in a Wright biplane and Baldwin's dirigible.
Ten thousand trained voices will sing Virginia ballads in the Old Dominion's first festival of songs next spring. John Powell of Richmond, a pianist and composer, directs preparations for the festival which will offer ballads as old as the civilization in the hills from which they originated.
The 450 ton dredge boat Texas was launched at the Marietta Manufacturing company. Built for McWilliams Dredge company of Chicago, it will operate on the lower Mississippi river.
West Virginia Automobile Association legislative committee adopted resolutions opposing any rise in automobile registration fees and the state gasoline tax. They urged a safety responsibility act, ten day stickers for new cars, and a higher speed limit to 45 mph. Members C Morgan Vester and Charles B. Evert attended with M. S. Aldrich, who criticized the county courts association plan to add one cent per gallon for secondary roads.
New York report on Hugo Rumbold a costume and scenery designer whose designs for London favorites are shown at Ferragil galleries. The article notes his theater philosophy and his Boer War and World War service. It mentions his lineage with Sir Horace Rumbold, the British ambassador.
Parke Davis and Company of Detroit, a pharmaceutical maker, files suit in federal court against the Internal Revenue Service claiming the bureau refused to remit $100,600 in corporation taxes. The petition seeks $100,000 in damages plus costs and interest. Fred L. Woodworth, I R collector, is named as defendant. The suit says $100,000 in excess taxes were collected during 1922 through 1926.
Huntington W V December 12 Separate squads of state police and city officers raided eight alleged gambling houses in Huntington and arrested sixty seven men on gambling charges. The state police led by Captain Thomas Barton and Sergeant Charles Carman raided six places and arrested thirty nine men. They were jailed in Cabell county or released on bonds from 500 to 1000 due to appearances December 17 before Magistrate Bascom Ray.

The city starts the first in a series of surveys for routes from the West End to South Bluefield under Kyle Bruce. City Manager Barton says surveys will guide the selection of a usable route and may provide winter work for about 80 unemployed residents.
Jonas Cooper, 35, was killed by Deputy State Forester George Rivers at Twin Creek near Portsmouth when Cooper refused to surrender during a still raid. Everett Lewis, 30, was wounded in the arm and held for investigation as Rivers and his assistant faced gunfire from Cooper and six others.
