Biltmore Estate joins effort to restore the American chestnut
The American Chestnut Foundation backs a restoration plan at Biltmore Estate in Asheville NC. Volunteers planted 202 blight resistant saplings this fall and 1500 more will be added later as part of a 15 year research program to reestablish the long vanished tree. Chestnut wood and food once sustained Appalachia, earning the tree the title redwood of the East.

Legend and history of the American chestnut tree
Legends note Cherokee villages near chestnut stands and use of fire to manage growth. Demand rose nationwide as chestnuts shipped by rail to cities for roasting by vendors and used in holiday recipes. Wildlife foraged nuts. farmers fattened hogs. Trees could live 600 years with 8 to 10 foot trunks. blight spared roots but eliminated mature forests by 1950. sprouts from old trunks could reach twenty feet before dying.
