Carmelites leave Barre to join New York convents lifting dwindling numbers
The 11 Discalced Carmelite sisters in Barre Vermont, now the state’s last such community, will move to join about 20 Carmelites in New York. Median age among the group is 65 with one member 90, reflecting aging and shrinking numbers. The nuns value a life of prayer and solitude but seek a more vital future by uniting with other Carmelites.
