Contributions top $1,075 towards Bluefield Christmas Tree goal

Bluefield residents donated funds to the Community Christmas Tree project, raising $1,075 though far from the nearly $10,000 target. Gifts will be distributed at a noon event on December 24 at Bluefield City Auditorium with Santa Claus arriving at 1 p.m. to hand out presents, fruit, and candy. Mercer teachers to get unique master's program in 1987

A unique master’s degree program for Mercer County teachers is being launched by the College of Graduate Studies for spring 1987. Designed by School Superintendent William H. Baker with COGS and Greater Bluefield Chamber of Commerce support, it offers no-cost courses in each teacher’s subject area, with a focus on writing and 15 hours in the teacher’s field, plus instructional effectiveness classes. Funding starts with Gov. Arch Moore Jr.’s office. official announcement set for Dec. 16 at the chamber’s holiday reception.
