The Tar Heels overwhelmed Miami Florida 122 to 77 as college basketball action produced a lopsided victory. Carolina stretched leads through the game with strong offense from its starters and bench, sealing a dominant win over the Hurricanes.
A Los Angeles Times report says Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah of Brunei agreed to send millions to U S backed Contras in Central America. State Department sources confirmed the figure but it remains unclear if Secretary Shultz discussed the move.
Bluefield residents donated funds to the Community Christmas Tree project, raising $1,075 though far from the nearly $10,000 target. Gifts will be distributed at a noon event on December 24 at Bluefield City Auditorium with Santa Claus arriving at 1 p.m. to hand out presents, fruit, and candy. Donations can be mailed to Bluefield Daily Telegraph or delivered to the office at 928 Bluefield Ave.
The forecast calls for sunshine this morning with increasing clouds later. High near 48 degrees. Tonight will be partly to mostly cloudy with a low around 38.
The Supreme Court will decide whether a 1984 federal statute withholding highway funds from states that fail to enact a 21 year old drinking age is constitutional. The court is expected to uphold the law.

A unique master’s degree program for Mercer County teachers is being launched by the College of Graduate Studies for spring 1987. Designed by School Superintendent William H. Baker with COGS and Greater Bluefield Chamber of Commerce support, it offers no-cost courses in each teacher’s subject area, with a focus on writing and 15 hours in the teacher’s field, plus instructional effectiveness classes. Funding starts with Gov. Arch Moore Jr.’s office. official announcement set for Dec. 16 at the chamber’s holiday reception.
