Half Of Nation's Mines Closed As Strike Begins

On December 6 1977 about 160 000 coal miners began a nationwide strike by the United Mine Workers against the Bituminous Coal Operators Association halting roughly half the nation s coal production. Benefits for about 815 000 miners and dependents were cut as trustees warned of tighter finances while talks paused with federal mediation.

Coal miner in winter shopping for Christmas dress

Mike Totten, a young coal miner from OHLEY West Virginia, paused during the coal strike to window shop for a Christmas dress for his wife. The Bluefield Daily Telegraph reports relief efforts as the Community Christmas Tree fund rises to 244 dollars toward a 4000 dollar goal with a December 24 tree party for about 1000 underprivileged Bluefield children. Contributions may be mailed or dropped at the Daily Telegraph office. Totten says he cannot afford gifts due to the strike but plans to contribute as soon as possible.

Pike Collision Kills Bluefield Man and Canton Resident

A head on crash on the West Virginia Turnpike near Princeton killed Bluefield resident James F. Kelley and Canton man Thomas C. Eubanks after one driver reportedly suffered a heart attack. Kelley 31, and Eubanks 76, died at the scene or after hospital transport.
