Police Search Swamp For Crash Victims In Jetliner Disaster

Police and investigators scoured a square mile of swamp near Kuala Lumpur for bodies and clues after a hijacked Malaysian jetliner exploded in flight and crashed killing all 100 aboard. Pieces of victims were found, the largest bone fragment about two feet long, and the flight recorder was not located. The Boeing 737 carried 93 passengers and seven crew from Penang to Kuala Lumpur to Singapore, most of them Malaysians. Aboard were Hoerr, a 41-year-old American education planner, and S. S. Naime, a 47-year-old Afghan-born senior architect.

Miners Walkout Across Virginias After Union Deal Expiry

Thousands of West Virginia and Virginia coal miners joined a nationwide strike as the UMWA Bituminous Coal Operators Association contract expired at 12 01 a m. Norfolk and Western to lay off additional workers in coal strike

Norfolk and Western Railway officials said the railroad would lay off an undetermined number of employees at midnight as the nationwide coal strike began. The company had already cut 1,500 workers last week and will not recall staff until miners return to work.
