Pageant of Trees at Bluefield Center Opens Yuletide Show

The Bluefield High School Madrigal Choir adds its voices to the annual Pageant of Trees at the Bluefield Arts and Crafts Center. Twenty two decorated trees adorn the center with daily showings Monday through Saturday from 9 am to 5 pm. Pam Godbey notes twenty two groups decorated trees while Gene Basham says the fifth annual event aims to put visitors in a Christmas mood.

Hopeful teachers flunking certification tests

Fewer than half of aspiring elementary and junior high teachers would pass the new state certification tests under panel cut-off scores. The Board of Education and Board of Regents met as officials said January will set passing levels. Of 304 students, 48 percent passed the K 8 tests. potential 78 percent when applying a standard error of measurement. Some tests showed better results than others with biology strong and health weak.

Medicaid Hospital Reaps Federal Match From Voluntary State Contributions

Bluefield Community Hospital officials said a Medicaid reimbursement check arrived last week made possible by a hospital voluntary contribution to cover state funds needed for federal matching dollars. Governor Arch Moore’s office said the funds would maximize federal Medicaid funding. The hospital nets about 200000 from the contribution, while the state owes its hospitals over 15 million. Officials predict further December payments could bring total near 17 million.

Christmas Tree fund drive kicks off with $55 raised

Bluefield area residents donated $55 on day one of the 1986 Bluefield Community Christmas Tree fund drive. The goal is $10,000. Donations can be mailed to Bluefield Daily Telegraph or delivered to the business office. Contributions listed include BNAI B'RITH Lodge 967 and donors from California and local names.
