U S productivity surged 6.1 percent annual rate in the April to June quarter, the fastest in eight years, bolstering recovery hopes. Analysts caution such gains may not repeat. unit labor costs declined 1.6 percent, real compensation rose 0.1 percent, and July jobs data could temper further gains.
Storms and tornadoes rolled through the upper Midwest but many areas in the corn belt stayed dry as a severe heat spell persisted. Temperatures rose above 100 in Des Moines and St Louis faced unhealthy air and prolonged heat, while 17 heat related deaths were reported in the Southeast. Tropical mood Barry drifted toward the eastern Gulf as severe storms crossed North Dakota Minnesota Wisconsin Iowa and Illinois.
Barry a broad tropical low drifting across 400 miles of Gulf of Mexico waters toward Texas parallels Alicia’s track. Forecasters say environment favors intensification and a rise to tropical storm could occur within 24 hours. At 6 p.m. EDT winds were 35 mph with center near 25.5N 89.0W, about 540 miles east of Brownsville.
Sixteen Virginia counties petitioned to be declared disaster areas due to severe heat and drought.
