J Westwood Smithers of Richmond was unanimously elected department commander of the Virginia American Legion at the close session of the 30th annual convention in Roanoke. A compromise ticket for the five vice commanders and delegates to the national convention was presented. Smithers is a University of Richmond law professor and World War II veteran, with prior Legion leadership roles in Richmond.

WVU Professor Moves to Virginia Tech as Mining Chief
Blacksburg Aug. 25 Charles Thomas Holland director of the school of mines at West Virginia University has been appointed head of the mining engineering department at Virginia Tech Earle B Norris dean of engineering announces. Holland a Winona West Virginia native graduated WVU 1928 and 1932 now becomes Virginia Tech mining chief after years as WVU teacher and mine superintendent at Lookout Smokeless Coal company. He lectured on American mining methods at Sheffield University England from 1945 to 1946 and is active in professional societies and technical publications.

School Bus Driver Examinations Administered in Princeton

Two Planes Collide Killing Four Near Annapolis
Four people died when two small aircraft collided near Annapolis Maryland. One victim identified as Mrs Helen Schmitt McGilvery former WASP pilot and airport manager. The other occupant was a Navy trainee whose name was withheld pending next of kin notification. The crash occurred on the Donald Trumpy farm four miles from Annapolis with the second plane striking a marsh by Harness Creek.

School Enrollment In County May Be 17,000
Approximately 17,000 students are expected to enroll in Mercer county schools when they open at 9 o clock September 7. W R Cooke, administrative assistant to the county superintendent, said yesterday. This would be the largest attendance since the war and up 600 from last year.
