King Coal Highway Aims to Link West Virginia Towns
West Virginia plans a southern King Coal Highway over ten years with a five year goal seen as feasible. The near two billion dollar project has about 50 million in funds, linking John Nash Boulevard near T. 123 to Isaban and Horsepen Mountain, then joining U.S. Route 52 and the Coal Fields Expressway at Welch. Mitchem cites potential for opening land for industrial and residential development along a route passing through Littlesburg, Sandlick, Rock, Montcalm, Crumpler, Kermit, Gilbert and Pritchard with several interchanges under design. The project faces high accident rates on U.S. 52 and will involve multiple interchanges and phased construction starting soon. Rotary President Davis Jarrell introduced the speaker.
