Gilmore to seek next phase of food tax cut in Virginia
Virginia Governor Jim Gilmore said he will ask the General Assembly to implement the second phase of a food tax cut from 4 percent to 3.5 percent by budget amendment. Revenue fell short by one tenth of a point of the forecast, though the year ended with a $5.8 million general fund surplus and a $24 million boosted total from other sources. The first half cent reduction took effect January 1 and lawmakers will consider the second phase at the January session.
