Chicago august 19 telegraphers strike escalates as leased wire operators are called out in six brokerage houses. Union and company officials both claim victory while more operators return to work at the board of trade as railroads risk shutdowns and a wider impact on commerce looms.

Roanoke Virginia August 19 G J Baldwin flagman on the Norfolk division of the Norfolk and Western was struck by passenger train No 1 in the west end yards and killed instantly He was about 40 with a wife and five children at Tuggles near Farmville The body was sent home for burial
A violent wind and thunder storm struck St Paul Minneapolis and Duluth causing extensive damage to lines at least several deaths and numerous injuries. Rain totaled 1.24 inches and train service suffered washouts. A Lake Independence resort was hit by a tornado injuring fifteen or more people.
New York stock market opened with active trading and irregular first prices. Within minutes the trend turned upward with gains of 2 to 2 1 4 points for Reading, Northern Pacific, Union Pacific, Amalgamated Copper, Smelting and Lead. The list also shows 1 to 1 2 point moves for Anaconda, New York Central and Brooklyn Rapid Transit as prices fluctuated.
The Swedish cruiser Fylgia carrying Prince Wilhelm passed the capes and reached the exposition grounds in Norfolk Virginia. International salutes were exchanged with Fort Monroe and Admire Evans' fleet as the prince landed for the day long reception program at Jamestown.
In Covington Kentucky William Uhley a 48 year old barber surrendered to Covington police after fatally shooting his wife Nellie at their home on 153 Stewart Street Jealousy was named as the motive authorities reported Uhley a resident of Covington Kentucky fled to the Covington police station this afternoon.
Three German tourists missing on the Jungfrau were found dead on the glacier below the optical stall after a fall estimated at two thousand feet. Guides located the bodies on August 19 in Berne Switzerland.

Rose Gallatin a fourteen year old girl was criminally assaulted and nearly killed in Menominee Wisconsin. She was knocked down knocked out and left unconscious in a grain field near the highway. Her bicycle was used by the assailant to escape approaching teams. Three suspects have been arrested and tensions run high as lynching is discussed locally.
The tramp who assaulted Alma Whitehead fourteen daughter of Rev Mr Whitehead Turnersville Pa. was run down by bloodhounds from Warren Ohio and captured shortly after midnight in a swamp near Wyck. He was taken to the Mendaville Pa jail.
In Casablanca on August 19 a large force of Moors attacked the French camp but were repulsed after a sharp conflict. French forces used field and machine guns with deadly effect and shells from the cruiser contributed to the defense.
Fire destroyed William Bantz's livery and boarding stable and two residences in Massion O. A hostler and sixty two horses died in the blaze including two race horses. Thirty two horses were saved. The loss is about 100000 dollars.

He had not visited home for over ten years and described himself as a confirmed roadster.
Ernest Booth, a helper at Bluestone Traction Company power house, narrowly escaped death while shifting a belt. He became entangled and was carried past a pulley before freeing himself. He suffered chest pains but was not seriously injured and returned home after treatment.
