Mercer official to head Beckley Raleigh County Health Dept
Mercer County's chief sanitarian Stanley Walls announced at the board of health meeting that he accepted an offer to become administrator of the Beckley Raleigh County Health Department. He will continue part time in Mercer, overseeing sanitarians and restaurant inspections, while Raleigh County duties would reverse his current role. Walls has served in Mercer since 1970 and suggested using the freed funds for a proposed food service worker class if part time. The board postponed final decision until more details emerged. The state plans to charge for the new class, pending approval, with classes possible by September 1 if the AG's Office approves. Nurses reported LaCross Encephalitis cases on Essex Street, with a boy hospitalized and later recovering after door-to-door education on transmission and control. Mosquitoes breed in debris around stumps and discarded items. Essex Street debris has been reduced and Bluefield cleared nearby creek trash.
