Signal wiring flaw prompts daily CSX inspections

CSX Corp conducts 250 daily inspections of railroad signals after a near miss in Fredericksburg last week. A deteriorated TC Green wire caused a false yellow signal while a Virginia Railway Express train boarded passengers four tenths of a mile away, prompting dispatchers to halt an Auto Train. No injuries. Officials note many wires remain in service nationwide.

UMWA re elects Roberts and Tarley to new terms

United Mine Workers of America re elected Cecil E. Roberts Jr. and Carlo Tarley to five year terms. The vote, the first with only two top officers, aims to boost funding for the Combined Benefit Fund and push Congress to pass bills transferring funds from the Abandoned Mine Reclamation and into the retirees health care program. Roberts and Tarley plan to lobby to increase support for coal as a key energy source.
