Roger Altman steps down as Deputy Treasury Secretary under intense political pressure. The resignation, disclosed by national sources, follows disputed policy debates and fiscal concerns surrounding the administration's economic plan. Altman will depart after serving in a key advisory role through crucial budget discussions.
The author and his wife Renee with two children left Oxford Mississippi for Charlottesville where the kids attend school. Penny Pynkala calls the move an extended sabbatical. He plans to return to Oxford in about a year after purchasing a 180 acre Virginia farm for $1 million. Grisham, famed for The Firm and The Pelican Brief, is settling in at a horse farm near his new home.
At the West Virginia State Fair in Lew isburg a 6 foot tall ice cream sundae will be assembled in front of the sheep arena at 3 p.m. by Mid East UDIA staff. The pool bowl holds 63 gallons of real ice cream topped with seven gallons chocolate syrup, three gallons butterscotch, three gallons nuts, twelve cans whipped cream and a quart of maraschino cherries. Meteorologist Stan Sweet will emcee and samples will be served. WV dairy industry had 23,000 cows and produced 227 million pounds of milk in 1993 with 1,200 farms.
On today’s calendar AAA Bluefield and First National Bank of Bluefield offer a Driver Improvement Program for 55 and older at the bank’s Learning Center 500 Federal St. Instructor John Rapp, a retired state police officer and Athens police chief, leads the session. Also today AARP Bluefield hosts a picnic at Bluefield City Park noon. Day one of the Tazewell County school year proceeds with few problems despite heavy rain. Superintendent Woodrow Mullins Jr reports upbeat early feedback from Graham High School and other principals while noting the district will finalize enrollment figures later. Weather caused earlier start to offset winter closures.
A grand jury in October will review evidence in a Matoaka rape case involving six year old girl. James Arthur Groves is charged with first degree sexual assault after a magistrate court found enough evidence to proceed. The assault occurred near School House Hill when the girl was lured by Groves for berries. She reported the incident later bleeding and was treated at Princeton Community Hospital. If convicted he faces 15 to 30 years in prison and up to $10,000 in fines. Groves remains jailed near Beckley.
Tazewell County votes 4-0 to join a proposed regional jail including Pulaski Floyd Giles Grayson Radford and Tazewell. Funding of about 32 million is to be reviewed by the Virginia General Assembly next year. County may use its jail as a 24 hour hold with potential to pull out next year. Estimated cost is 4.22 per prisoner per day.
LUEFIELD The Mer cer Tazewell leadership program enters week three with students touring WVVA TV6 Bluefield Daily Telegraph and Adventure Communications. Tom Colley Daily Telegraph executive editor notes the privilege of living in an area with three modern computerized facilities and strong media resources.
Wasieease Arv4ne Ey Frank Barnes, Adventure Communications general manager, says the town has blessed media facilities. WVVA News Director Cheri McGraw guided the production and newsroom tour. Students participated in an actual newscast and then visited the Telegraph newsroom where Colley and Lifestyles Editor Samantha Myers Perry led the session.
Remnants of Tropical Storm Beryl brought steady rain across Southern West Asia and Southwest Virginia with five inches falling in some areas. Officials reported minor damage including a tree down on Route 20 near Cargo station and flooding in several roads, while no major incidents were confirmed as the flood watch was canceled.
