Giant ice cream sundae built at West Virginia fair
At the West Virginia State Fair in Lew isburg a 6 foot tall ice cream sundae will be assembled in front of the sheep arena at 3 p.m. by Mid East UDIA staff. The pool bowl holds 63 gallons of real ice cream topped with seven gallons chocolate syrup, three gallons butterscotch, three gallons nuts, twelve cans whipped cream and a quart of maraschino cherries. Meteorologist Stan Sweet will emcee and samples will be served. WV dairy industry had 23,000 cows and produced 227 million pounds of milk in 1993 with 1,200 farms.

Grand jury to hear Matoaka rape case against Groves
A grand jury in October will review evidence in a Matoaka rape case involving six year old girl. James Arthur Groves is charged with first degree sexual assault after a magistrate court found enough evidence to proceed. The assault occurred near School House Hill when the girl was lured by Groves for berries. She reported the incident later bleeding and was treated at Princeton Community Hospital. If convicted he faces 15 to 30 years in prison and up to $10,000 in fines. Groves remains jailed near Beckley.

Tazewell County votes 4-0 to join a proposed regional jail including Pulaski Floyd Giles Grayson Radford and Tazewell.
