A lone House member determined the fate of a bill to restore twice daily home mail delivery. Rep Walsh of Indiana was across the country and might be absent tomorrow, risking the measure being tossed aside or dying. Supporters awaited his return from Green Bay for a speech.
India's Benegal Rau urged the United Nations security council to entrust six small nations Yugoslavia Cuba Egypt Norway and Ecuador with drafting a Korean peace plan. The panel would act as a private or public forum and could hear any person it chose, aiming to break procedural stalemate and reduce tension between the big powers.
United States forces report strengthening defense at the Changnyong bridgehead as 60,000 Korean Communist troops mass for a fresh crossing near Taegu. The 24th Division and First Cavalry pursue an offensive to clear the Naktong barrier, countering tank-supported advances and aiming to drive Reds back to the river's west bank. Lloyd H. Sidener will receive 1722 by mail for wages lost after the United Mine Workers kept him off the Canton Illinois job. A National Labor Relations Board official said Sidener, now in Miami Florida, agreed to accept the payment from United Electric Coal owners of the Carton mine where he worked as a shovel operator. The wage claim totals 1946 gross before taxes. Sidener was idle March 15 to May 28 and faced a union fine for attempting to work during a coast strike which was later canceled. He moved his family to Florida and may not return to Canton.
Government seeks revocation of bail for 11 top leaders of the Communist Party including Eugene Dennis. Ten are free on bonds of 20 000 to 30 000 each while Dennis serves a year in jail for contempt. Court to hear cause Thursday as prosecutors pursue detention amid ongoing appeals and a criminal conspiracy conviction.
A 50-year-old laborer, Paul Locket of Richmond, was buried five feet under dirt in an 18 foot sewer trench when earth caved in. His coworker J L Robinson helped digging. Locket's head was unearthed and rescuers tried oxygen, but he refused aid and helped finish digging himself out with no lasting injuries.
The 4 200 ton ship Quebec caught fire in the lower St Lawrence River near Tadoussac Quebec. All 550 aboard including 400 passengers and 150 crew reached shore safely today after the blaze began.
The senate approved a plan guaranteeing a reasonable profit to meat packers under wage price controls as part of the 1950 mobilization act. Maybank backed reviving an old OPA provision to cover wholesalers and curb black marketeering while Taft and Wherry warned against selective favoritism.
On Mount Whitney the 17 year old Christopher Reynolds, heir to a Camel fortune, remains missing after an eight day climb with Steven Wasserman. Rescue teams and Sierra Club climbers persist on the icy crevasses as the body of Wasserman, 17, is recovered at the 11 500 foot level and transported to Whitney Portal while Miss Libby Holman races back from Europe to aid in the case.
Union officials warned of a possible nationwide railroad strike by trainmen and conductors but said they would continue White House peace conferences. Washington reports the talks continued despite the threat and ongoing negotiations.
Penny Clark seven dies after darting into traffic near her home in Los Angeles. Mrs Nedra Clark widow of Buddy Clark endures a lifetime of tragedy including the 1941 stabbing deaths of her mother and child. Buddy Clark died last October in an air crash leaving a lasting public sorrow.
Housing official Tighe E. Woods said 18 communities including Chicago, Boston and Jersey City will extend federal rent controls into next year. The federal law in effect July 1 ends December 31 unless incorporated areas vote to continue due to housing shortages. July actions by the local governing bodies were deemed legally adequate. Sophia, West Virginia, was among them.
In Walhalla South Carolina Aug 14 police and guardsmen ended a crowd of up to 4000 seeking revenge against Curtis Shedd after he confessed to killing John Boyter and led authorities to the bodies of two girls Johnnie May Boyter 14 and Jo Ann Boyter 8 in a wooded ravine near Highlands North Carolina Boyter was found shot in Georgia last week Curtis Shedd 30 was moved to a Gainesville Georgia jail and charged with murder authorities said no charges against Boyter's widow Christine Boyter 30 were filed as the crowd dispersed and calmer conditions returned.
Democratic senator McCarran blasted the State Department for its handling of China and urged backing Chiang Kai-shek as the best anti-Communist hope in Asia. The clash followed GOP and Democratic charges over Korean policy and political meddling ahead of the November elections.
President Truman, in a message to South Korea's Syngman Rhee on the republic's second anniversary, declares that victory is assured as he denounces the Communist invader and pledges support for Korea's freedom and independence. The White House made the message public.
Burrell D. Fisher of Chester Virginia was convicted in Richmond traffic court for driving 110 miles per hour inside city limits. Judge Harold C. Maurice ruled it reckless driving, given the 25 mph limit, and Fisher was fined 100 dollars with a six month driving permit revocation.
Wytheville Virginia August 14 a new committee formed to aid polio victims in Wythe county emphasizes fellowship over charity. Led by S B Sarell the group includes W G Shores O M Johnson I W Park Ruth D Thomas and W T Trevillian with a $10000 gift from Wytheville knitting mills. Clergy are to meet at George Wythe hotel to finalize a county wide relief organization that serves all residents regardless of creed or color.
Efforts to settle an unfair labor practice complaint filed by soft coal operators against John L. Lewis and the United Mine Workers failed. A trial examiner for the National Labor Relations Board will open hearings tomorrow. Denham offered a stipulation to avoid hearings, but the union rejected it. operators favor dropping the case due to their two year contract with Lewis.
