Robecourt's fall marks an epoch in offensive as thrusts gain almost complete control of Thiescourt plateau and nearby high ground. Vesle operations see attacks repulsed with French gains narrowing the enemy line.
Paris reports the town of Robecourt on the road to Noyon, six and a quarter miles southwest, has been captured by French forces. The official statement notes progress between the Matz and the Oise, seven officers taken prisoner including two battalion commanders, and German counterattack preparations observed east of Belvat. Artillery near Roye and Lassigny remained spirited.

Secretary McAdoo presented before the Route Ways and Means Committee a revenue bill option that retains current excess profits rules or applies an excess profits tax up to eighty percent. The plan targets about ninety percent of all business corporations and could raise an additional 300 to 400 million dollars versus the tentative committee plan. McAdoo and Chairman Kitchin said they would continue discussions to reach a unified proposal.
Washington reports a fresh German retreat signaled by a push against front lines in Flanders or between the Oise and Soissons. General March notes Germans are more than fifty miles from Paris as talks of a major push by Allied forces intensify. Hon Henry S Bowen prominent Tazewell county resident died at Bluefield Sanitarium after an operation for appendicitis. He was brought there late last week as complications arose. He was considered one of the county’s best known and most useful citizens.

Washington reports 179 American casualties in France from army and navy divisions. Army list shows 101 names in two sections with killed in action, died of wounds, missing in action, died of accident and other causes, wounded severely and undetermined. Names include Privates Howard F. Brewer of New Brighton among those listed.
The story recounts a lengthy battle with peritonitis and intestinal troubles. Despite four operations and hopeful moments, Mr. Bowen died after a gallant struggle. His widow and five children survive, with funeral plans for the family cemetery at Witten Mills.
Word from Elkins West Virginia reports Major Davis Skins Elking arrived safely in France. He serves as adjutant of the Thirteenth Brigade in the American Expeditionary Forces and was at sea during the state wide primary when he was nominated as the Republican candidate for United States senator.
Westchester Pa Aug 14 The jury in Philadelphia fifth ward case returned a guilty verdict against defendants Isat Deutsch David Jennett a police lieutenant and five policemen charged with conspiracy to violate the Sherman law prohibiting officers from political participation and to hinder a fair election. The jury was out about nine hours.
The oil industry, via the national petroleum war service committee, will regulate prices, premiums, and crude movement to avoid direct government oversight. The plan runs until November 1 and may continue with government approval, pending results and market prices.
