In Oklahoma political battles tighten as an added primary vote tally reshapes the field. Governor Cooper runs unopposed in North Carolina, while ex Senator Gore plans to oppose Senator Pine in Oklahoma’s contest. the party tickets see shifts as results come in.
Two long time lawmakers Norris of Nebraska and Robinson of Arkansas won their party primaries. Norris secured the Republican senatorial nomination after a bitter Nebraska campaign while Robinson, a Democratic leader and 1928 vice presidential candidate, won Arkansas decisively.
Mrs Ellis A Yost, former Ohio Northern student and West Virginia native, to direct Republican national committee women’s activities next week. She leaves Washington WTJ role as WCTU rep. succeeds Louise Dodson. Yost has long led prohibition and suffrage efforts and served on education boards and party committees.
Washington August 13. Governors arrive for White House relief conference with President Hoover. La Guardia presses accusations of 25 30 percent vegetable price rises in New York City and asks Hyde to publish daily vegetable arrivals and prices to check farmer profit. Red Cross pledges 5 million for immediate use if needed as drought relief plans unfold. Ten of twelve governors plan to attend in person with others represented by proxies.
In San Francisco an August hearing on Warren K. Billings’s pardon exposes surprise witnesses who call Estelle Smith and John Crowley perjuries. Dr. Joseph Shane and W L Claybourne challenge Crowley and Smith testimony about the July 22 1916 Preparedness Day bombing.
Lute Hall Lee Hall and Sam Davis were jailed near Williamson after a federal hearing on still operation charges. They could not contact families until a dog delivering a note tied to its neck brought word home, revealing their whereabouts and status to relatives.
In Cresson Pennsylvania on August 13 Joseph Zelenski aged 60 killed himself by slashing his throat after calling his son to his room.
August 1 prospects in West Virginia are the poorest in the country. The WV crop and livestock service says the 1919 1929 average yield is only 65 percent, down 11.4 percent since July 1 due to intense heat, hot winds, and a prolonged drought across the state. The drought over the last three months is blamed for the weak outlook.
Paul Montgomery a 25 year old local aviator confessed to flying a bombing raid over the Providence coal field early Monday. He claimed two or three men hired him and warned that he and his family would be killed if he refused. He said the bombs were dropped to target miners and mining property with no loss of life. Montgomery said he avoided homes and returned with a passenger to the field. Extradition to Kentucky expected as investigation widens.
Survey data from 20 of Maryland's 23 counties presented at a marketing conference indicate the drought has caused the heaviest crop losses in state history. Agriculture officials report 75 to 90 percent corn losses in many areas with pasture damage up to 95 percent in Alleghany County and severe fruit losses.
Eight-year-old Jack Mahley vanished from his home in McGrath Minnesota last Monday. Ten-year-old Nels Mahley Jr led a search party with deputy game warden E R Lyman to the body and confessed the shooting was accidental. Coroner Seavey ruled the death accidental.
Albany August 13 Governor Roosevelt announced the creation of the St. Lawrence water power commission selecting five members described as outstanding. He invited the panel to meet in Ogdensburg on August 30 for a two day river inspection aboard the state yacht Inspector. Speculation linked former Governor Alfred E Smith to the post though he was not named.
President Hoover will discuss relief methods with farm chiefs S H Thompson of the American Farm Bureau Federation and Louis J Taber of the National Grange at a Washington conference.
Eight inmates escaped the Greenbrier County jail in Lewisburg West Virginia including Roosevelt Darnell who is to be hanged November 14 for murder and Glen Tyree sentenced to life for taxi driver killing. Police and guards organized posses to search nearby hills as two saws were found in the yard.
Capt Frank M Hawke flew from Glendale to Curtiss Field in 12 hours 25 minutes 3 seconds to beat Lindbergh’s time and hold both directions records. He earlier set the East West record of 14 hours 50 minutes 43 seconds, with refueling stops at Albuquerque Wichita and Indianapolis. He landed near Valley Stream after leaving the West Coast at 5 16 27.
Fires raged across eastern Maryland and West Virginia with hundreds of volunteers battling a Washington County blaze that covered about six square miles. Officials urged fire prevention as more than 100 fires flare daily statewide and Clarksburg sought 500 extra fighters while water shortages loomed for Annapolis.
Strongs Michigan August 13 a forest fire approached within 80 rods of outskirts and risked Strange. A fire train with a 40000 gallon water car was en route to assist once winds shifted. If the flames head away before the water arrives, danger to the town is averted.
Three Rivers Quebec reports the British dirigible R-100 pausing en route to St Hubert after 95 miles in 94 minutes, with officials noting tailwinds expected to aid a 48 hour Atlantic crossing. At St. Louis observers celebrate the ship’s departure for England with forecasts of excellent weather for the return voyage.
Grief over losing custody of her four year old daughter spurred former actress Lina Basquette to take poison at her apartment as guests left a party. She was not seriously harmed and is under care in a police hospital. Basquette, widow of Sam Warner, had lost custody to guardian Harry Warner and recently separated from husband Peverell Marley. Police note her gown shop venture may have contributed to her despondency.
Madison West Virginia August 13 Freeman Collins 21 was found guilty in Boone county circuit court of murder in the first degree with mercy for the July killing of P F Jerrell 45 deputy county assessor. The life sentence mandatory by verdict will be imposed later. He claimed self defense as witnesses said he had a grudge against Jerrell and struck him with an axe while he slept on a mountain after a day’s hunt.
Maryland Republicans launch campaign for a statewide ticket led by Baltimore Mayor William F. Broening. Speakers cite state road scandals taxation and federal funds, with Democratic tariff policy and Conowingo power as issues. Broening himself does not address the ticket.
Theo dore Demulver of Grosse Point Michigan swam the Detroit river toward Windsor to meet attorney David A. Croll but was blocked by cold water and police. Police later informed Croll that Demulver was barred by immigration officials from entering Canada. He had carried clothes in a rubber bag and attempted several trips before authorities stopped him.
A six year old boy, John Darrell Jr., was struck and killed in Sewant on August 13. Police pursue a driver in a hit and run case as the victim is identified as the son of John Darrell.
Masson Quebec Aug 13 fire sweeps eastern Quebec village destroying fifty structures and leaving 150 families homeless. An elderly woman died of a heart attack while fleeing, two children were missing, and major buildings including the town hall church convent and school were razed amid low water pressure and bucket brigades.
The 6 am reading of 42 below zero in Meadsville indicates a severe frost across Crawford County. Vernon township farmers reported damage to sparse buckwheat crops amid the drought, while the forecast suggested warmer weather without further extreme cold tomorrow.
