The U.N. Security Council prepares to act on a resolution enabling military force to secure humanitarian deliveries in Bosnia. Overnight fighting around Sarajevo leaves 18 dead as Serb forces reportedly surrender to Bosnian units.
Donald E. Shaver, a Modesto Municipal Court judge, confessed to placing a tack on his sixth grade teacher Donald Lohmar’s chair 31 years ago at L. T. Stone School in Galesburg Michigan. The reunion meeting occurred after Shaver sought Lohmar through the local paper. Lohmar recalled Shaver as an engaging yet disciplined student and accepted the gesture, while Shaver sought forgiveness.
A platoon of city workers and National Guardsmen moved the M-41 tank from Brush Fork Armory to Bluefield City Park on Tuesday. Leading the effort were Junior Brown Samuel Carter Parks and Recreation Manager Cliff Parnell and Robert King with top crew Bob Dennis Sgt Harry Comer Sgt Morris Yule Sgt Larry Bane Master Sgt Dallas Hyl ton and Sgt John P Rose. Dennis noted his World War II experience with the vehicle.
An M-41 tank donated by the West Virginia National Guard arrived at Bluefield City Park in front of Bowen Field after a one hour tow. Sgt. Comer said the tank, once a Korean War staple, adds historical heft to the park as park officials plan a commemorative plaque detailing its weight and service.
Grundy Virginia resident Mary McClanahan, Buchanan County Chamber of Commerce executive, advocates extending Interstate 66 from the Eastern Seaboard to California. With Del. Jackie Stump, she promotes a Beckley route through Harrisonburg Lexing ton White Sulphur Springs Beckley Grundy and Jenkins Kentucky. Interstate Project 66 Inc seeks $319,000 to complete a nationwide feasibility study amid a $1.275 million federal appropriation. Any town within 30 miles of the highway could prosper, McClanahan says.
Grundy Virginia Buchanan County Circuit Court Judge Nicholas Persin set bond at 20 000 property or 10 000 cash for convicted Supervisor William P Harris after his two misappropriation of funds convictions. The 140 spectators heard witnesses testify to Harris character as his daughter Regina faced emotional distress from his failure. The jury recommended a 71 year sentence and Persin will sentence Harris on October 26.
President Bush announced a ten billion dollar bank loan guarantee to help Israel absorb refugees from the Soviet Union and Ethiopia. Prime Minister Rabin, visiting Kennebunkport, pledged to curb new settlements while strengthening security ones. Congress must approve. terms favor easier borrowing for five years and cover administrative costs.
Seven-year-old Heather Barnett and her sister Jessica, five, of Bluefield spent a warm Tuesday skating along Union Street and sunbathing nearby, turning a simple afternoon into a lighthearted family outing.
The West Virginia survey shows Gov. Gaston Caperton at 41 percent and Cleve Benedict at 38 percent with 21 percent undecided. Clinton leads Bush 51 to 39 in the presidential race, undecided at 18 percent. Demographic splits by age income education and party show Clinton ahead overall, Benedict strongest among Republicans.
