More than half an inch of rain fell in Bluefield with general showers across the section. Winds caused some window damage and creeks rose to their highest levels since last spring while temperatures eased from the day’s 92 at 4 pm to 90 later in Bluefield before dropping further.

A. D. Payne Amarillo lawyer confessed to murdering his wife and maiming his 9 year old son with dynamite in their car on June 27 and asked for the electric chair. He described eighteen months of plots to kill his wife to hide financial losses and relations with Verona Thompson. Prosecutor expects grand jury action August 25. Payne showed no remorse for the murder. He claimed plans to blow up himself and denied involvement with another woman.
Dan Massi and Nick Caviello, both 15, of Uniontown continue a long tree perching effort after reaching 500 hours today. They aim for the tree perching championship as spectators watch their endurance run into tonight.
State troops from Camp Knox Kentucky were ordered to Marion Indiana to prevent further outbreaks after a mob seized the Grant county jail and hanged two Black men accused of fatally wounding a white man and assaulting his 18 year old girlfriend. Authorities planned a grand jury review and prepared to pursue the death penalty for one suspect.
In Martinsville WV, Sheriff L B Snyder announced Melvin Slider confessed after a day of questioning to killing Lott Loudenslager on July 20 at the Loudenslager cabin near Mobley after Loudenslager had murdered his wife and stepdaughter Annabelle Hupp.
Dale Jackson and Forest O Brine push to extend the Greater St Louis endurance flight toward the Hunter brothers record. They had logged 444 hours by 7 11 p m and hoped to surpass 420 hours with about 110 hours remaining, aiming to set a new mark next Wednesday morning.
Mrs Laura Nelson surrendered to state investigators after a telephone call from Jack Zuta prior to his slaying at a lake resort near Delafield Wisconsin. Police cite a John Doe murder warrant and raids as they probe links to Chicago Tribune reporter Jake Lingle’s death.
Mutineers from Hankow garrison including the commander's bodyguard struck at the Nationalist government as preparations to defend Hankow against converging Communist bands were rushed. District Attorney Herman Salen said Laura Nelson, who surrendered to Chicago police, or another occupant of her Chicago apartment, could be a vital witness in the killing of Moran mob leader Jack Zuta. He cited 10 to 15 calls to a Delafield area number connected to Nelson and a man linked to Zuta, suggesting Zuta called that number shortly before his death.
Mexico City reports the interior department will strengthen frontier checks to block undesirable Americans. Washington requests aid to curb liquor smuggling and bootlegging, and to keep out gamblers.

The appellants include editor Robert Permar, publisher Charles E. Hodges, former Governor Albert B. White, and A Spates Brady.
Manuel Herrick once a flamboyant Oklahoma congressman was jailed in Baltimore on a liquor manufacture charge after being arrested at a moonshine operation. He said he believed he was gathering evidence for prohibition officials while denying recent enticements of money. He faces grand jury action after a $1500 bond.

Nashville reports belated unofficial returns show Governor Henry H. Horton leading for a second two year term with 131,357 to 93,339 for L. F. Gwinn while Cordell Hull tops Andrew L. Todd by 54,000 in the U S senate race. David W. Dodson receives a small vote. Arthur Bruce appears to win the Republican gubernatorial nomination.
Pottsville Pa Aug 8 seven miners killed and 16 injured in a top fall at the Gilberton colliery of the Philadelphia and Reading Coal and Iron company. Rescue crews from nearby collieries freed survivors as 13 men received only first aid before extraction. Names of the dead include Strucka Burke Koker Yourchen Birmingham Comeroski and Mallick.
Pittsburgh reports a truck leaking foaming high test beer led to seizure of the motor vehicle and fifty barrels. Ray Paxter of Cleveland and Nathan Martin of Pittsburgh were arrested. Paxter said the trip started from Detroit on a day with the beer. Martin claimed he did not know the load’s nature and had only been given a lift.
In Scranton on August 8, the United Mine Workers and anthracite operators signed a new five and a half year contract. President Hoover praised the agreement via message read at a massive signing in Masonic Temple. Secretary Davis predicted a new prosperity era as 2,500 attendees witnessed the holiday celebration with flags flying.
British forces clashed with Afridi tribesmen near Peshawar with an estimated 5 000 to 10 000 attackers. Casualties not disclosed, but early reports indicate few wounds on either side. Simultaneous fighting spread in Karachir district where Muslims and Hindus clashed, two dead and seven wounded.
