Mayor A C Villasenor reports 17 dead in Nogales Sonora after a cloudburst floods sweep eight feet through business districts. About 40 missing, later 27 accounted, with 60 homes destroyed and 60 more ordered to evacuate. Mexican soldiers seek remains amid debris.
Flood waters sweeping Nogales Sonora and Nogales Arizona killed four people and left forty missing as Mexican soldiers and residents searched debris. Two unidentified women were found on the American side and another body was recovered from a collapsed home. Over 100 were homeless and fifty houses endangered, prompting evacuations and aid appeals from local Red Cross, chamber of commerce, and American Legion chapters.
Manuel Herrick, former Oklahoma congressman, arrested in St. Marys County Maryland on a claim he acted as a prohibition informer. He was held to the federal grand jury on 1500 dollar bond after raiders destroyed a 1000 gallon still and confiscated 12000 gallons of mash and a truck with fruit jars. Herrick, 54, told officers he earned fifteen dollars weekly. a fourth man escaped.
Lexington Kentucky August 7 Nelson McIntosh a 16 year old Ashland boy who died after 496 hours in a tree has been declared state champion tree-sitter. Sherod Rouser 11 gave up the perch and Jo Riley 9 also fell but was uninjured.
William F Hite 63 of Huntington West Virginia was fatally injured when his car collided with a lumber truck and crashed into an electric pole. His wife was critically hurt. Grandchildren William and Caroline Jones survived. Ely Hite witnessed the crash. Hite once published the Huntington Herald Dispatch and ran for US senator in 1916.
In Marion Indiana a mob of about 1000 took two African American men from Grant county jail and hanged them on the courthouse square after a fatal shooting of Claude Deeter 23 and an assault on his companion Miss Mary Ball 19. Thomas Shipp 18 and Abe Smith 19 were executed. Deeter died at the county hospital this afternoon.
Dale Jackson and Forest O Brine tied their prior fuel endurance record flying the Great St Louis monoplane above Lambert Field for 420 hours 21 minutes. They now chase the Hunter brothers of Sparta Illinois for the new mark.
The acid seared body found at Lake Pepin is identified as Hugh Rausch alias Hauser, 30, of Rockford. Police suspect gang violence. initial marks were thought buckshot but later judged acid burns likely inflicted before drowning. An inquest is planned for tomorrow.

San Francisco Aug 7 Chief Justice Waste announced the California Supreme Court justices planned to move the Billings pardon hearing to Folsom prison to hear Warren K Billings who was convicted with Thomas J Mooney in the 1919 Preparedness Day parade bombing. The court will not issue a formal order and the hearing is likely to shift next Thursday.
Senator Simeon D. Fess of Ohio was selected by the Republican executive committee to assume the duties left by Claudius H. Huston who resigned as national chairman.
Huntington W Va August 7 an agrarian group formed by Cabell and Wayne county farmers and dairymen seeks drought relief through cooperative feed buying and presentations to officials. they aim to obtain freight rate relief loams from the government and a government survey while mayor james b. taylor offers water free of charge if hauled away by the city.
New Martinsville authorities press on with Melvin Slider 29 as three charred bodies were found in a burned Mobley cabin. Slider again denies involvement and claims no romance with Annabelle Hupp or ill will with Lott Loudenslager. Sheriff Snyder and Deputy Ritz plan to resume questions. Trenton Loudenslager released on own recognizance.
George Bernard Shaw signed his first movie contract allowing a British firm to produce his play How He Lied to Her Husband as a talking picture. He predicted other plays would follow and said he signed to make money.

Shanghai reports a possible stabbing death of American missionary Rev Allen N. Cameron in Changsha heightening foreign worry. Governments move foreign warships up the Yangtse as Communists threaten Hankow Wuchang Hanyang with a mid August offensive and Kiukiang evacuations continue.
Baltimore news reports L. Robinson, superintendent of fuel and locomotive performance for the Baltimore and Ohio railroad, died suddenly at his home in Jesups near Baltimore. A Danville Virginia native, he joined the B and O in 1904, later led Martinsburg shops, and was promoted to superintendent of the entire system in 1920.
Four Marine Corps officers will be decorated with the Navy Cross for distinguished service in Nicaragua. Col. James T. Buttrick, Maj. Miles R. Thatcher, Capt. William K. MacNulty, and First Lieut. Edwin A. Hakala will be cited for leadership, planning, and gallantry in action with Marine units and Nicaraguan volunteers. Lieut.-Col. Elias R. Beadle, retired, could not attend due to illness.
Claudius H Huston resigns as Republican national committee chairman after a short turbulent tenure. Senator Fess of Ohio is named to succeed him and Robert H Lucas of Kentucky becomes executive director to direct the party's fall campaign. George S Keim succeeds Franklin Fort as secretary. Ernest Lee Jahncke and Ezra R Whitla are chosen as national committeemen from Louisiana and Idaho respectively. Huston condemns persecution and says he resigns to avoid hindering the party's efforts.
Chicago and Wisconsin authorities widened their hunt for suspects in the killings of Tribune reporter Jake Lingle and gang leader Jack Zuta. Claude Mahaffey and William Doyle were sought for possible identification. Wisconsin officials denied identifying Henry Finklestein. Mayor Thompson asked the July grand jury to consider reinstating John Stege as chief of detectives after his resignation following the Zuta case.
The Milwaukee Sentinel reports witnesses identified Ted Newberry, ally of Al Capone, as a member of the gun squad that shot Jack Zuta, a Moran gang leader, in a Delafield dance hall. Witnesses say Newberry fired into Zuta. authorities withheld whether other gunmen were named.
A court order obtained by Mrs. Newell Vaughn, Frank Hawks's former wife, could hinder his plan to depart Sunday on a New York air dash. Hawks, who set a new Fast-West transcontinental speed record yesterday, must appear Monday to justify why he did not pay a judgment of 10 6ah. 69 res oon Vaughan, their 1924 divorce.

Detroit August 7 police announce four suspects in the July 23 Buckley shooting at the La Salle hotel. Thomas Licavoli Ted Vizzino Mike Morgany named as gunmen and Frank Commarata as driver. Underworld motive cited. Livecchi held on murder charge.
Charles Ankrum, a farmer near Barnesville, was jailed after a $1 fine plus $29 costs for failing to pay a county tax on six dogs. He said the Pennsylvania licensed dogs were sent to his home for summer by his sister.
Ottawa August 7. R. B. Bennett, Alberta based Conservative leader, was sworn in as prime minister with cabinet members as Liberal government under W. L. MacKenzie King resigned after defeat in the Dominion election. Most cabinet members took oath in the East block. E N Rhodes and J A MacDonald awaited swearing in.
Former United States Senator James D. Phelan of California dies at 69 in San Jose after extended illness. He served six years in the Senate, led San Francisco as mayor 1897 to 1902, and played a key role in California civic projects and Japanese land issue debates. Born 1861 in San Francisco, he declined an ambassadorial post to finish his Senate term. He never married.
A. D. Payne of Amarillo confessed to placing three sticks of dynamite in his car. The blast killed his wife and maimed his 9-year-old son, and he faces murder charges. Payne claimed he planned suicide to leave insurance to his children and sought death by electric chair. He allegedly acted over love for Verona Thompson, a former secretary.
Charleston West Virginia reports a thunder shower bringing rain after more than two weeks of dry weather. An unofficial 103 degree high marked the day, while Huntington saw a brief thunderstorm and a 98 degree high. No damage was reported.
