Barry storms into Alabama bringing needed rain to droughted fields
Tropical Storm Barry brushed the Florida Panhandle and Alabama causing downed limbs and power lines but delivering valuable rain to farmers in dry fields. The storm briefly neared hurricane strength, then weakened to a tropical low as it moved across Alabama. No serious injuries were reported, though roads and schools faced closures. Farmers welcomed the rainfall, noting cotton is at a critical stage and that 3 to 5 inches could help. Restoration work began after outages affected about 37,000 Gulf Power customers. Evacuations were advised in eight Panhandle counties and Franklin County ordered island evacuations.
