A Wednesday ruling invalidates Michigan’s law requiring teenagers to obtain parental permission for abortions. Abortion opponents decry the decision as absurd while the measure’s supporters weigh options.
Nation A-5 Atlantis astronauts again failed to untangle 12 miles of line on a reel as the shuttle orbited with a half ton satellite sliding 750 feet overhead on the end of the jammed cord. Flight directors met at Mission Control to choose a next step and one option was to sever the tether and abandon the satellite.
The city of Bluefield will seek funds from the West Virginia Recycling Grant Program to meet the 1993 state recycling requirements. Funds will support litter prevention and recycling efforts as a resolution was adopted.
A Tazewell County man was arrested Wednesday night in Amonate on assault charges after his wife alleged he tried to set fire to her and their child. The sheriff declined to name him, citing possible further charges. A Sept. 17 court date was set.
Officials said Wednesday that Southern California’s odds of a major earthquake starting with the Big One will be recalculated after two June events. Scientists link the likelihood to changes in underground stress from the Landers and Big Bear quakes, magnitude 7.5 and 6.6, near Los Angeles.

West Virginia officials move to compel Consol Energy officers to cooperate in investigating the March 19 Blacksville No. 1 explosion that killed four. Consol officials invoked the Fifth Amendment as the state sues to enforce compliance, citing methane testing lapses, inadequate ventilation, and failure to post contractor lists.
In Grundy Virginia, Buchanan County Circuit Court opened with Judge Nicholas Person warning against political conduct in court as eight women and four men hear two counts of felony charges accusing William P. Harris of misusing revenue from the William P. Harris Recreation Park. The case hinges on a privately held park account and alleged delays in turning funds over to county authorities.
Kristie Lambert performed country and gospel selections in downtown Princeton during the weekly Music in the Square concert on Wednesday. Sherri Sampson also appeared as part of the lineup.
