Engineer Donovan Killed at Utica
Thomas Donovan a longtime Blue Island resident and Rock Island locomotive engineer was fatally struck by the Rocky Mountain Limited at Utica Illinois noon Saturday August 10. He died en route to St Marys hospital after a transfer from the ambulance. Donovan age 48 born Oswego New York August 10 1870 married Anna Nolan Joliet had seven children Marie Gertrude Walter John Loretta Agnes and Thomas. He leaves widow mother two sisters and a brother. Funeral at St Benedicts with burial Mt Olivet. He was a member of Knights of Columbus Blue Island Lodge 1866 and Blue Island Loco Engineers division 815.

Death of Harold Ludwig After Train Accident Near Fulton Street
Harold Ludwig a 14 year old son of Mr and Mrs Wm Ludwig of 593 High street was killed instantly last Tuesday evening when knocked from a Rock Island passenger train near Fulton street He was returning from Midlothian country club as a caddie and witnesses say he swung a foot backward just before the accident His foot struck a switch stand and he was dragged under the wheels The body was taken to Krueger's undertaking rooms for an inquest Funeral services were held at the Lutheran church with Rev M P Doermann officiating Harold was born November 22 1904 in Blue Island and is survived by his parents and several siblings

Desplaines Man Arrested For Disorderly Conduct
Walter Dertz of Desplaines and Vine streets was arrested on a disorderly conduct charge. He posted a $50 Liberty bond for trial on August 12 and was fined the full bond amount plus extra costs by Police Magistrate Heintz.

Register 21 Year Olds for Aug 24 Draft, Blue Island Lemont
Provost Marshall General Crowder ordered all men who turned 21 since June 5 or will be 21 by August 24 to register on an emergency basis. Local boards will conduct registrations 7 am to 9 pm at Blue Island post office building and Lemont city hall. About 150,000 in the US fall in class 1 and may be inducted within a month after recording as the government expands manpower for the war program. The date for a broader 18 to 45 draft is anticipated in September with hopes for 10,000,000 registrants.

Mrs. Nichols Dies at 88 After Sudden Illness
Mrs. Harry Nichols aged 88 died at St Francis Hospital after a heart attack and convulsions while preparing breakfast. She lived on Greenwood Avenue with her children Leone and Lyle. her husband died earlier. Services were held at the Greenwood home, and the family will take the body to Des Moines Iowa for burial. Born August 30 1880 in Perry Indiana, she married Harry Nichols February 8 1900. they had lived in the area about thirteen years.

Train Wreck Halts Rock Island Main Line Near Vermont
A Rock Island wreck north of Vermont street involving an engine a passenger coach and four box cars halted the main line for about four hours. A freight train backing out of yards struck by a special with brakes failing the conductor escaped uninjured and a telegraph pole carrying the line wires was broken. Trains were diverted via suburban tracks during clearance.

Local Police Officers Cleared of Pro-Germanism Charges
