Two robberies occurred in Freedom over the weekend. A Saturday night break in at the post office yielded pennies and stamps with no clues left behind. Sunday night Ben Shouse was robbed near Freedom after being forced into his car, with reports of $80 taken. Authorities suspect the same pair may have attempted Lyons Bank last week.
Peter J. Kruger, internal revenue collector for the Indianapolis district, says Treasury has ordered an investigation into theater price hikes. He warns managers charging more than a ten percent rise in ticket prices risk war tax penalties, noting a thirty three and one third percent rise is not allowed.
Evangelist Conner delivers strong sermons to growing Christian church audiences. A high school group attends the service tonight with services continuing through Sunday.
Representatives of the Indiana State Bar Association met in the Supreme Court chamber at the statehouse in Indianapolis with Jesse E. Eschbach to form district conscription boards. Each board will select attorneys to aid drafted men with questionnaires and exemption classifications. Greene county is represented by Theodore Fe. Slinkard, W. V. Moffett, and William L. Cavins.
The November term of the Greene Circuit Court opens next Monday for ten weeks. The criminal docket is set but not published. criminal trials start one week from Monday. Civil matters will be taken up next week, with civil cases scheduled later. Probate work begins in the first week, including guardianships administrations and wills. The Citizens State Bank sues Alice Fuller Hardesty and William Wright on a note seeking judgment. Ben F. Holtsclaw is appointed administrator of Eliza Ray deceased. Luther Luthard named administrator of Anna Suthard estate. Elizabeth Davis appointed administratrix of Alexander H. Davis estate. William Brandon named administrator of Riley Mansfield estate. Millard Ingalls named guardian of Nora Lawhead and Nora Lawhead minors. James G. Abram named guardian of Lydia A. Abram minor.
The Courier-Journal and Maj. Gen. Hale organize a khaki Santa program for over 30 000 Kentucky Indiana and Illinois troops at Camp Zachary Taylor Louisville. A 84th Division tree gift plan includes mail gifts to soldiers and a fireproof warehouse for storage with electric illumination and coordinated distribution.
At Camp Zachary Taylor soldiers will be called by name as bands play and a Santa Claus visit marks a season greeting, showing the military post in a festive, communal observance.
U S FOOD ADMINISTRATION urges citizens households and facilities to follow a wartime diet plan. Meatless Tuesday and Friday baconless breakfast wheatless Wednesday one wheatless meal daily and reduced sugar and animal fats are advised.
Greene County seeds has boosted the Y M C A war fund drive with a $9,000 goal. The active campaign closed last Monday though some township reports are still pending. Local officers C E Davis Henry Humphreys and O F Herold lead with loyal township committees as residents contribute across Bloomfield Grant Fairplay Center Jackson and Taylor townships totaling at least the listed sums and expected to surpass the target in days ahead.
Dr. B F Chambers of Lyons donated a load of corn to the Y M C A fund. Lyons women agreed to gather the corn and Postmaster Davidson Voris Davidson Rev Lane M H Pirtle and Elwood Spear husked a load donated by George Bogard. They sold it to James Jordan for 1.10 per bushel and received 34 10 for the load. Louis French hauled the corn.
Miss Ethel Landis of Linton wed Harold Sturtevant in a Beaver Pennsylvania home ceremony on November 9. Daughter of Mr and Mrs John D Landis she is known in Bloomfield before moving to Linton. Sturtevant is a steel inspector for the American Locomotive Company of Schenectady New York. They plan residence in Pittsburgh Pennsylvania.
A girl was born to Mr and Mrs Oliver Reels of Highland township on November 23. A boy was born to Mr and Mrs Ross Bran num of Bloomfield on November 22.
