An uprising in Russia forces the emperor to abdicate and appoints his younger brother as regent. The revolt threatens stability as authorities attempt to quell the movement and maintain order.
For days the scarcity of food has sparked unrest as soldiers refuse to fire on civilians. Only a few casualties are thought to have occurred amid the tension and resentment.
A strike of 400000 railroad employees is ordered for six o’clock Central time. The East will be first affected with potential nationwide action within five days unless a settlement is reached. Managers claim skeleton trains may run if workers stay away. the brotherhood denies this.
Government construction drives large hiring surge at Navy Yards and ordnance plants. Demand spans machinists, brass molders, blacksmiths, crane operators, pattern makers, laborers and more. Wages run from 2.16 to 4.48 dollars daily. Inquiries advised at the post office.
The town board held a special session and by unanimous consent enacted an ordinance to meet government free mail delivery requirements. Bloomfield boasts a well-timed post office and adequate lighting and walks, with minimal estimated costs. the move reflects the wishes of the vast majority of residents.
Sectional games held Friday and Saturday at Washington included Linton Newberry Epson Loogootee Lyons Switz City Marco Montgomery and Loogootee. Notable scores show Washington defeating Lyons 85 to 13 and Newberry beating Washington 43 to 9 while Lyons topped Loogootee 34 29 and Montgomery fell to Newberry 34.
The American mine at Bicknell set a new daily coal record by lifting 4,777 tons in seven hours and forty five minutes, following a 4,157 ton day on December 2 that surpassed a 4,116 ton state record. Ninety seven cars were loaded, and a train a mile long carried the coal to market as the plant eyes 5,000 tons in one day.
John Rector, an early Jackson township resident, died at his Owensburg home Sunday night at age eighty two. He was the father of Mrs. John Perrin of this place. Mrs. Perrin and her daughter Mrs. R L Campbell of Palestine Illinois attended the funeral in Owensburg on Tuesday.
Switz City horseman N W Corbin visited town Wednesday to arrange posters advertising his pure bred Percheron stallion for the 1917 season at J R Corbin's Switz City barn.
Mrs. Ida M. Bryan died Tuesday morning in Buffalo New York after brain tumor illness. Her funeral at the Presbyterian church in Bloomfield was led by Rev. G W Horn with large attendance. She was born Ida Frame July 28 1863 in Senecaville Ohio and lived in Solsberry Indiana before marriage. Survived by four daughters seven grandchildren and siblings, she was active in church groups and groups including the Argonaut Club. Burial followed at Grand View cemetery.

The funeral for Mrs Josephine Cavins Torr wife of J D Torr was held at their residence on South Indiana Street Sunday afternoon. A large crowd attended with abundant flowers. Rev R H Toole of Locust Street M E Church officiated.

The Bloomfield Opera House presents Neil Twoney dramatization of Gene Stratton Porter story Freckles on Monday March 19. Broadway Amusement Co presents an elaborate tour with exceptional company and original music by Anatol Friedland. The Woodland Fantasy sequence is highlighted as a musical novelty.

Mrs. George Jean hosted the Wednesday Social Club as the Domestic Science department under Miss Harrah plans a dinner for the school board members and their wives this evening in the public school building’s domestic science room.
Court entries list sessions from Monday March 19 to Saturday March 24 with calendar items and new cases. Dockets include inheritance tax matters at 1358 Hunter and 18998 Wilson v Dugger among others. Dispositions cover larceny cases State v Wilber Clark and Cade and damages in Shafer v Harris plus quiet title in Bedwell v Granbaugh.
County Clerk Ashcraft issued marriage permits since the last report. Ernest Ball age 20 and Cecil Pauline Buskirk age 17 from Greene County. John Wilkie age 28 of Highland Township and Myrtle Louise Tally age 26 of the same place. Martin Copeland age 53 of Linton and Goldie Baker age 25 of the same place. Also John M. Meredith J P united George Maynard Gray of Greene County and Irene Edith Grove of Bloomfield in marriage at the Presbyterian manse with Rev. G W Horn officiating. Best wishes are extended for their future happiness.
A daughter was born to Mr. and Mrs. Lee H Jones on March 14.
Governor Goodrich signed the bill abolishing the office of road supervisor. G. H. Hendren of the state board of accounts says the change saves the state about 143000 dollars. Township trustees will oversee dirt road repairs under the new law.
Mayor Lawton of Bicknell issues orders to police to close all club rooms and enforce the Sunday closing law. Clubs have been operating openly on Sundays and patrons easily obtained liquor.
