Work Begins on Eel River Ditch East and Defrees Dredge
Work on the Eel River channel started Wednesday with the mam moth dredge from East and De Frees. A twenty foot wide cut through the S & W railroad to the river edge was made in hours, delaying trains only briefly. The ditch will reach 75 feet across at the top 50 feet at the bottom and 29 feet deep below the rails, with two more dredge trips planned through the railroad bed. The dipper weighs ten tons and can load a 100,000 capacity car with gravel in seven minutes.
