Bloomfield and Worthington businessmen form a Sheldon School based class on better business methods. Lectures alternate between Bloomfield and Worthington with T. F. L. Henderson of Chicago leading. A library meeting secured several new members, bringing Bloomfield enrollments to about ten.
George Lester of Taylor township delivered one load of corn to the C. F. Engle feed store last Saturday and was paid $114.45. The load weighed fifty four bushels and thirty eight pounds at about $2.10 per bushel, a sharp rise from a few years ago when similar loads brought roughly $25.00.
Worthington hosts a community chautauqua starting Saturday and running through August 8. The program includes many features and a good turnout of Bloomfield attendees.
The pastor with Revs J D Crane and Joseph Campbell and Mrs Florence McCracken and Mrs Amy Pringle attended the District conference at Riley on Monday and Tuesday. METHODIST SUNDAY SCHOOL reports 111 in Sunday school and urges continued effort to stay above the hundred mark. A family of nine attended last Sunday and will be away next week.
Mrs. Joseph Bland died at her home in Linton on Saturday after a yearlong illness. She leaves her husband and three sons Oscar E. Bland, John Bland of Terre Haute, and Ollie Bland of Detroit. Hon and Mrs Oscar Bland and daughter Helen arrived from Washington yesterday.
Denman Kelly formerly Worthington schools principal has accepted a high school principal position in Franklin. He and Mrs Kelly were in Worthington last week to ship household goods stored there to their Franklin home.
Greene county started its quota examinations Monday at 8 in the Masonic lodge with board members E. Kirby Ashcraft Jeptha Moss and Dr T Roy Cook presiding. Thirty one men passed physically fit with no exemptions while about nineteen more faced disqualification or exemption requests.
A roster lists many residents including Lyons, Linton, Bloomfield, Jasonville, and Worthington who filed or indicated intent to file exemptions. Names include John L. Goodman, Harry Fitzpatrick, Harry Clyde Meredith, Walter Spainhower, Erma Page, and numerous others across Linton, Jasonville, Bloomfield, Switz City, Solsberry, Sandborn, Midland, Koleen, and Scotland. The compiled list reflects diverse towns and multiple individuals seeking exemption status.
Washington Department policy limits exemptions for postal workers amid Wilson order. Carriers laborers and many clerks below set grades face denial unless physically unfit or with dependents. Several named carriers from Indiana towns report exclusions or enlistments as the first executive action enforcing indispensability.
Born to Mr. and Mrs. John Murray of Indianapolis a daughter Charlyn Frances born July 31. A boy born to Mr. and Mrs. Frank Allen Jackson township August 6. A girl born to Mr. and Mrs. Allen Page Jackson township August 4.
The residence of Mart Chaney was badly damaged by fire last Saturday morning when a coal oil stove exploded. Mrs. Chaney, who had been in the garden, found the kitchen ablaze and the fire spread to the back and roof, destroying woodwork and contents. Mrs. Chaney suffered severe burns to her arms and singed hair.
Guy E. Coleman twenty two year old drowned at Spencer yesterday afternoon while swimming with four companions. His body was recovered about thirty minutes later. Coleman was numbered 258 in Owen county's draft and had enlisted in Company D Second Indiana Infantry now serving at Jeffersonville. He and eight others were to report today at Jeffersonville.
