A jumble of early 20th century items notes Chicago paying Charleston $8 560 amid will disputes and contestations. Reports mention floods feared in Chippewa Falls pleuro pneumonia in Illinois and a variety of unsettled events across the country.
The Dakota territorial Republican convention convened at 10 30 with A C Melfette presiding. Judge Gifford was renominated by acclamation amid a platform backing division and admission, condemning Dawes bill delays and Sparks as ignorant. The event listed Grigsby as opposing candidate and echoed vetoes on pensions while pledging party unity and land policies.
Washington September 23 The president had a light day with few callers including Porter assistant secretary of state and Rev Henry W White of London chaplain to the queen and Senator Ransom He skipped the usual Thursday cabinet meeting and instead visited his country residence with Mrs Cleveland and Mrs Folsom Acting Secretary Fairchild and others called at the White House The president will resume his official and social duties tomorrow morning including a public reception at 1 o'clock for strangers to pay respects Official visitors will be received in the forenoon
A severe lightning storm on Sept. 23 caused fires at multiple wells, a gas tank, and a gas works in Brotherton area. Five wells were destroyed along with oil and machinery, totaling losses around 325,000. The fire spread to a railroad bridge but was contained. rain fell heavily to aid suppression.
Governor Oglesby and Attorney General Hunt visited Chicago to confer with the live stock commission on measures to eradicate the cattle plague. The livestock board planned experiments and post mortem exams. the Phenix and Shufeldt distilleries’ 2000 cattle will be slaughtered, well cattle appraised at about 85 dollars per head.
A Chicago meeting is planned for October 18 with signers from Chicago Louisville St Louis Milwaukee Cincinnati New York Boston and others to push action against rising anti whisky sentiment and defend the trade. The notice signals the need to counter public hostility to liquor businesses.
Commissioner Black released a report on the pension bureau for the year ending June 30, 1886. At year end 466,788 pensioners and 2,558 navy invalids, with a net gain of 20,685 names. Total pensions paid reached 268.07 SSL.ne. certificates issued numbered 161,416 with 79,989 increase certificates for widows and dependents. The special examination division saved the government over $8,000.

The Knights Templars held their twenty third triennial conclave drawing between 15,000 and 20,000 on the grounds for charity exercises aiding Masonic home widows and orphans. He, a longtime Hartford financier, had led multiple firms and mortgaged vast credit. He fled to Montreal as insolvency looms, with Hartford paper estimated near 800000 to over 1,000,000.
