President Harrison submits a lengthy Chilean affair note to Congress detailing the Baltimore incident in Valparaiso, asylum for refugees, police violence, and the demand for formal apology and reparations. It states the United States will pursue strict diplomatic recourse if Chilean authorities fail to respond satisfactorily.
The Chilean government replies to the United States ultimatum agreeing to withdraw the Matta note and to withdraw its recall request for Minister Ragan. It proposes arbitration over the Baltimore sailors attack or submission to the U S Supreme Court if not accepted. White withdraws all. New York Jan 26 Herald reports Senator Hill will field a solid Illinois delegation to Chicago.
In Locaxspont Indiana Sunday night an odor from a flue led to the discovery of B. F. Hutwon a patient from Ellhart county missing Thursday. Authorities investigate death cause and possible foul play. Feared for Mor Lite. Chapman arrested in New York on complaint of his wits who feared her life was in danger while he remained in the house.
Reports from Washington indicate President Harrigan notified the senate committee that Chile’s response is unsatisfactory and that Chile will not offer an apology or reparation without further conditions. Naval demonstrations may be considered. In other notes, a bank raid in Wilton yielded $4,000 in cash and jewelry. Descriptions of Iowa and Monterey events follow, including political maneuvers over Secretary Cliff’s election, a fatal cow-attack incident, and court actions on municipal bonds and crime.
