A heavy snow and storm blanketed Washington with thunder and lightning disrupting telegraph and fire signals. Secretary Windom pledged to buy 4 per cent bonds, setting prices and surplus estimates. In Savannah a devastating blaze destroyed Hogan’s shop, nearby buildings, and the youth halls, with total losses near 1.6 million and widespread property damage across the block.
In Fort Monnor Virginia a severe snow storm lasting forty eight hours caused telegraph outages and beach and roadway damage. The Constellation rode out the gale with top masts housed.
