The 11th annual Punt Pass and Kick for boys ages eight to 13 remains open through October 1. Starr Ford sponsors locally with competitions beginning October 2 at the local level and moving through zone to national. No entrance fee or equipment needed and no body contact. Boys with a parent or guardian may register at Starr Ford.
Huntley Project capitalized on Big Timber miscues to win 38-8. Dan Kautz led the Red Devils with three rushing touchdowns. Dennis Henthorn added a 63 yard TD run and 133 total rushing yards. Big Timber failed on several drives due to interceptions and a fumble.
The Sweet Grass Mental Health Clinic opens Mondays and Thursdays at Sweet Grass Community Hospital with Robyn MacCarter as the assigned psychologist. Services include marriage and family counseling, outpatient therapy, emergency care, and education, with inpatient care in Billings and sliding-scale fees.
The Wiligro Garden Club hosts a Friday dinner and awards for 17 youths who mowed two lawns in Big Timber this summer under contractor supervision. Proceeds support mental health outreach while honors include 4 H dog trials and a 25th anniversary for Carl and Thelma Mosness with community attendance and gifts.
Darrell Anderson won 55 dollars in the Who's Who contest sponsored by Big Timber merchants. He correctly named Wally McArthur as the mystery personality and provided all ten clues. This was the final drawing after 15 weeks of participation with readers encouraged to redeem winning certificates.
Dan Halverson was elected president of the Sweet Grass 4-H Leaders Council at the council meeting on Monday. Selma Gibby was elected vice president and Guelda Halverson was named secretary treasurer.
The Hospital Guild annual membership drive runs October 1 to 15 with 50 cent dues. Black and county solicitors will collect funds used for hospital equipment purchases, Christmas gifts for nurses and aides, a silver spoon and fork for the first baby of the new year, and loans to student nurses.
Maurice L. Thompson pleads not guilty to first degree murder in the August 28 shooting of James Van der Voort and seeks mental health evaluation. Judge Shanstrom orders psychiatric testing at Warm Springs State Hospital after a September 23 hearing in Sweet Grass County Court. The Town Jo Lavold will speak at a Women’s Club luncheon at Frye’s Cafe on October 4 at 6 30 P M.
The Margaret Deegan Chapter named seniors Tim Bailey Kelli Duffey Shannon Ronning Debby Sargent Lee Stutterheim Cathy Whidden and juniors Lisa Boe Leslie Bonnar John Goosey Dudley Tyler Ron Henry to National Honor Society based on leadership service character and scholarship. Provisional membership for sophomores and transfer students is described with future regular membership contingent on continued criteria.
The report cites winter wheat seeding nearly a week late due to short topsoil moisture in the northern two thirds of the state. Haying is nearly done and the second alfalfa cut is 95 percent stacked. Corn silage harvest improved to 60 percent, dry beans half finished, potato digging just starting, and livestock in good condition after a hot summer with 5 percent excellent, 80 percent good, 15 percent fair. Movement from summer ranges remains ahead of normal. ranges show fair to good condition.
Senator Carrol Graham urged shifting secondary road upkeep to the state highway department at a Montana Highway Commission and interim committee meeting. He warned of higher gas taxes and counties losing road funds, as some counties struggle to maintain common roads. Rep Kenneth Wolf noted wasteful county equipment use, citing Glacier County’s 30 thousand dollar gear used just three weeks. A bill to require state control of frontage roads with permanent surfacing and high traffic was under consideration after failing in 1971.
SGHS hosts 1971 homecoming with bonfire pep rally and football game on October 7 8 parade Friday at 11 30 led by marching band drill team and cheerleaders queen candidates named from each class voters elect winner announced at halftime. free game passes available to seniors 1921 1946 1961 and 1971 graduates.

Memberships remain at prior prices thanks to reciprocity with Bozeman.
The Lions Club sponsors a dedication of the Mor ado in memory of Mrs Will Churchill at City Park Sunday October 3 from 3 to 5 PM The building has welcomed local and out of state travelers this summer and Mr Churchill has received thanks from picnickers for the new facilities A short program and refreshments will conclude the ceremonies.
