Te Oregen Mr. and Mrs. Jack Hulberg of Spokane stopped here Monday to visit her brother, Harry McComb and family. They had been to Michigan to see Mr. Hulberg's parents. Accompanied by Mr. McComb, they left yesterday for Salem, Ore., for a visit with their sister, Mrs. Ray Marshall.
Salt Lake City recruiters announce Wednesday as the start for the women’s Army Corps and women in the Air Force recruiting programs. Lt Elsie Ellingson leads in the intermountain area with Sgt Anna Hugonin and Sgt Florence Tucker assisting. Enlistment rules require ages 18 to 34 with under 21 parental consent, high school graduation, and physical standards. Enlistees for the Army Corps go to Camp Lee Virginia. air force recruits go to Lackland Texas or Hamilton California depending on prior service. First group sworn in late month. The County Federation of Women’s Clubs will convene in the library club rooms on Wednesday October 6. A 10:30 a.m. business session includes club reports and officer elections. A noon picnic follows at the city park weather permitting, otherwise in the club rooms. Families welcome and a program is planned in the afternoon with guests invited.
Senator Byrd, chairman of the reduction committee, says May federal civilian payroll stood at 2,066,285 and grew by 500 daily. He argues a 30 percent cut, about 630,000 jobs, could be made without harming essential functions, saving about two billion dollars annually.

Magician and comedian Mitchell Cain, billed as the world’s greatest, tours the United States and appears Friday October 8 at the high school auditorium. The two hour show includes a padlocked box escape with a $1000 reward, hypnotism stunts, production of a lady from thin air, and audience participation. Proceeds benefit the school's athletic fund.
Roy Cox a Livingston sheep herder pleaded guilty to abandonment of a band of sheep before Justice M A Clayton. He was fined 200 dollars and, if unpaid, jailed 100 days. Henry Guth filed the complaint alleging Cox quit without proper notice, leaving the flock uncared for.
Rev. Cloyd H Conner longtime Montana Congregational leader of Billings dies from head injuries after a two car collision near Livingston. Funeral set for Friday in Billings with burial in Mountain View. Survived by widow son Stuart daughter Mrs Morledge and several siblings. Coroner to hold inquest later.
S E Andy Anderson 53 former co owner of the Big Timber cafe died Sunday in a Billings hospital after about two years illness. He was a member of Hawkins and Anderson real estate firm in Billings and had lived in Montana since 1916. He was born February 27 1895 in Minnesota and married Thelma Kuriger in Miles City March 7 1934. Surviving are his widow two sons a Navy son a brother two sisters and other relatives.
The Big Timber Womans club hosted a Monday evening reception at the high school for teachers and patrons. President Mrs Frank Chase introduced Principal Gilman Aller and Superintendent A C McDonald who presented teachers. Performances included a Ruth Bieber piano piece, Patsy Murphy whistling, a quartet, and a skit The Teachers Are Here.
The state fish and game department announced an elk kill of 400 head max above the checking station and not more than 100 head below. Season open statewide but may close when the goal is met. A near Spanish Creek mouth checking station is planned. The Gallatin drainage target sparked debate at a recent sportsmen's meeting.
Weather notes show September total of 1.07 inches, below the ten year average of 1.93, with only 1939 and 1943 drier. Nine other Sep totals from 1940 to 1947 are listed, frost at 35 degrees on the 28th, highs 81 on the 23rd, weekly precipitation 0.55, and a forecast high of 55 and low of 35 likely to frost again.
The Big Timber Sheepherders host Red Lodge Miners Friday at 2 pm at the high school field in the first home football game. Stores will close 2 to 4 pm for attendees. Three players are injured and out, but Captain Eddie Gunderson Leon ard Mahlum and Larry McComb are listed among the injured. Admission 50 cents adults 100 for grade school. The only other home game this year is against Harlowton Engineers on October 8 with store closings also requested.
Fort Peck reservoir in eastern Montana is overpopulated with fish Col E H Walter army engineer at Fort Peck told the Missouri Basin Interagency committee He said the lake backed by Fort Peck dam holds many species and anglers may be asked to help reduce numbers Walter noted a two year joint survey by the state fish and game department and the federal fish and wildlife service will study habitat and population Species listed include trout pike bass sturgeon catfish perch crappie ling bullheads gold eyes and drums.
Helena dispatch reports the Flying C ranch plans sixth trainload of cattle from Anceney Friday. Northern Pacific official H. H. Ellsworth says the shipment raises the fall value to $200,000 for 5,400 head. Early loads went to Colorado feeder lots, with later shipments to Omaha. about 2,000 more cattle expected in November. The ranch spans 150,000 acres between Manhattan and Bozeman.
Western states reported a jump of over 75 million dollars in farm and ranch product values for January through June 1948 compared with 1947. Cash receipts totaled 1.903 billion, led by California with 873.336 million and Washington with 192.579 million. Montana rose from 100.506 million to 119.506 million year over year.
Mrs. Clara Severance 88 died Sunday at the home of her daughter Mrs. Millie Snyder after months in care. Funeral Tuesday from the Congregational church with Rev. P. N. Bennett officiating. She was a pioneer Montana woman, first organist of the church, and an honorary member of Homeland Circle and Sweet Grass Chapter Order of Eastern Star. Survived by three sons, four grandchildren, seven great grandchildren.
Dr and Mrs Paul Raber of Normal Illinois became the 1948 millionth visitors to Yellowstone Park as they entered the north gate on September 23. Park officials presented free entry and accommodations while the couple, on a Chicago honeymoon, accepted the honor. California and Illinois led yearly attendance and all records were broken.
To Beoreman Mr. and Mrs. Malcolm Goosey Jr. have moved to Bozeman where he has enrolled as a freshman in the engineering school at the college.
