A daily Bailey Hardware forum tale recalls Scarface the half ton grizzly once king of a Yellowstone garbage dump. In 1933 a younger rival toppled him in a savage fight described by True magazine writer Jack Tooker, ending Scarface’s reign.
Public school introduces evening workshops for mothers of first and second graders led by Mary Alice Walsh and Katharine Douglas. The program aims to show parents teaching methods, aid teachers with high enrollment, and build stronger teacher parent child relationships. Mothers made a paper plate face clock for classroom use.
The American Legion sponsors a Sunday race meet at the fairgrounds with 1:30 p.m. start. Eight races include various distances and a girls race for 17 and under. Purse $800 plus $10 entry per race. Entries close 10 a.m. Sunday. Admission $1.50 for adults and 50 cents for children 12 and under.
A large red balloon rose over Big Timber at 12 30 PM as part of Operation Winds for Freedom. The event launches the Crusade for Freedom effort led by county chairman Orvin Flare with Palmer Finsvik assisting. Local American Legion Auxiliary members administer distribution and publicity.
The Big Timber Rifle and Pistol club plans a fall running deer shoot at its outdoor range five miles north of town on the Melville road before the season opener. A turkey shoot is set for Nov. 18 at the indoor gym range. Luck targets will be used and all adults are invited to join. Registration with Dorothy Traver or Walter Osborne is urged for the fall riflery program with 24 spots in the first class.
Frank Mc Elwain leads a ten year tracking project at the local high school comparing graduates occupations with courses studied. Early data from classes of 1949 and 1950 show college entry rates, service in the armed forces, and dropout patterns. The program aims to evaluate course quality, aid student guidance, and support accreditation upgrades with Northwest Accrediting association next year.
County fair results list 4 H and FFA members with blue red and purple ribbons. Names include David Anderson Donald Anderson Margaret Anderson Sharon Anderson Delynn Bainter Clifford Bare Richard Bare Kathleen Beley Marion Beley Jack Berg Gail Birkeland and others with dozens of blue red and white awards across lamb poultry sheep beef and gardening. The notice appears in county event coverage by F B Peterson, continued on page five.
Cub pack 21 holds its first fall meeting Friday September 21 at 7 30 p m in the parish hall. All boys age 8 to 10 are invited to register and parents are expected. A pre organization meeting was held to acquaint parents with the Cubbing program. Ten mothers were elected for the year and the Lutheran Brotherhood sponsors the Cubs in Big Timber.
Gray Cliff Mont shooter Hoem will compete in the 66th National Smallbore Rifle championships in San Francisco October 3 6 announced by the National Rifle Association. The 1951 event follows a 1949 Des Moines renewal, with last year’s title race canceled due to the international situation. The field includes top smallbore riflemen contending for the title now held by Robert Mains of Dallas Texas.
Four violators were jailed after pleading guilty before Justice of the Peace C A Bishop. Jack McLaren and Raymond Fahey were caught with a deer at Christensen old folks home after deer were killed on Big Timber Creek. They were fined 50 dollars and 30 days in jail. Clifford Rollins and John Nitsy were found with two buck deer on the Grey Cliff road below the river. Each paid 60 dollars and received 15 days in jail.
The Big Timber youth council, formed with Patricia Bouse as chairman, Pat McIntyre as secretary, and Bernard Berg as vice chairman, elected adult supervisors and planned projects. Students from all grades will participate under advisory adults including Mrs. Strobel and Mrs. Lape.
The Remnants club World War I veterans from the 362nd Infantry Regiment will hold its annual convention at the American Legion hall in Big Timber on Saturday Sept 29. Robert Cosgriff is president and Ed Adam is secretary of the state group. Open house starts at 430 PM with dinner at 630 PM. Thorval Simonson and Jake Plaggerman are local members. The group recalls battles of St Mihiel and Meuse Argonne and the Belgian campaign until the Armistice. A champagne bottle stays with the secretary for the last two survivors.

A Tuesday night meeting of the high school board and about forty residents launched plans for a city hot lunch program for high school and public school students if a workable plan is adopted. Mrs. Hetland heads a committee to explore cooking and serving areas, with Dr. Olness and others advising on feasible spaces. Grey Cliff details show 40 students now receive hot lunches for fifteen cents, aided by state funds and surplus food, with mothers rotating desserts. space constraints forced desk meals and plastic plates.
