A public meeting is set for Thursday September 16 at 8 pm in the high school lunch room to review past and future freshman initiation ceremonies. The gathering is called by rural school boards and local parents and townspeople concerned about this year’s procedures and is open to all residents.
Mrs. Leon R. Bertoliatti of Santa Barbara recalls Montana links at Pacific Lutheran University in Parkland Washington. Ellen Ward Lape Evelyn Strand Stensland and Jane Officer reconnect with Big Timber friends, sharing campus visits and memories that bind Big Sky readers across distances. A Montana sky tale and campus reunion highlight the enduring clan created by the Pioneer newspaper.
Labor Day week shortened yet entries remain high for the Who's Who clues contest. Dorothy Trees of Reed Point correctly guessed Robert Elgas and will receive 5 dollars. This week’s list includes Honk Honk Protection and other clues. the top prize rises to 125 dollars with a winner to be announced in the next issue.
Hazel M Townsend 58 died Monday in St George Utah after six years of liver cancer and two operations. Born October 2 1906 in Holliday Missouri she married Dr L H Townsend in Kirksville Missouri September 7 1926. They lived in Athens Florida and St Louis before moving to Big Timber in 1928 and later to St George in 1959. Survived by her husband and a grandson Bruce William of Laurel plus cousins in California and Missouri. Funeral Saturday at 2 pm at Lowry chapel with Rev E Brentwood Barken of Butte officiating burial Mountain View.
Olay Mydland 71 died Tuesday at Sweet Grass Community hospital after weeks as patient. Born September 3 1894 in Sogndal Norway he came to the United States in 1913 moving from Kansas to Big Timber. He worked for Mackey Sheep Co. of Billings and spent part of each year in Big Timber. Survived by two brothers Leonard Henry Mydland and sister Gardine Larson all in Norway. Services Friday at 2 from Lowry Chapel with Rev Ocee Johnson officiating burial in Mountain View.
Mrs Phyllis Church suspects she may be one of the sconchers in an old Livingston Enterprise clipping. The note jokes about speed laws eight mph in country districts and six mph in cities, warning that heavy fines will follow for violations.
Herders open their season Saturday at Lodge Grass against the Indians, led by veteran returnees and a 37 man roster. Coach Graham notes improved team attitude as starting lineup is finalized after scrimmages. key players include Ellison Mosness Tyler McGehee Simmons and Ludwick with possible setback for Roger Thomas due to knee injury.
Enrollment at Big Timber public school reached 327 students on opening day August 30. Grades totaled First 41, Second 44, Third 41, Fourth 40, Fifth 37, Sixth 45, Seventh 39, Eighth 40. Orientation for teachers featured E H Fellbaum of Montana State University and a demonstration of overhead projectors by Jim Downs of Billings. The old bell tolled to start Monday classes.
County Superintendent Violet Widdicombe announces a meeting of rural teachers of the county on Saturday at 9 30 a m The meeting will be held to discuss county education matters and plan upcoming activities for rural schools.
The American Legion hosts a Saturday event inviting all soldiers to compete for cash prizes. Prizes are awarded for various categories and uniforms may be worn. Clem Stim notes that even the ill fitting will be unrecognized. Several details remain to be announced.
The annual Girl Scout Fund Drive is scheduled for Saturday with calls for local citizens to contribute and support scouting activities. The effort aims to raise funds to assist programs and projects for area Girl Scouts.
The Montana Fish and Game Commission released 1965 hunting dates and season rules for grouse partridge and turkeys and announced the opening for ringnecked pheasants. Ringneck hunts begin statewide at noon October 31 with a concurrent Hun garian and chukar season and a yet to be set bag limit. Mountain grouse season runs September 12 to November 28 in western counties with a five bird daily limit and ten bird possession. Sage grouse seasons start September 19 in specified counties with varying end dates and bag limits. Sharptail and partridge hunting runs September 19 through October 17 in listed counties with a three bird daily limit. Hunters may take up to six chukars and huns per day and 12 in possession after opening. Continued on page eight.
